On May 18, 2022, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits declined 3.2% to 1,819,000 units in April of 2022 from 1,879,000 units in March of 2021, but higher 3.1% from 1,765,000 in April of 2020. Single family building permits decreased 4.6% to a rate of 1,110,000 units in April of 2022, from 1,163,000 units in March of 2021, and there were 656,000 multifamily building permits issued in April of 2021.
Nationwide housing starts down 0.2% to 1,724,000 units in April of 2021, from 1,728,000 units in March of 2021 but jumped 14.6% from 1,505,000 units in April of 2020. Single family starts dropped 7.3% to a rate of 1,100,000 units in April of 2021 from 1,187,000 in March of 2021, and there were 612,000 multifamily building starts in April of 2021.
Nationwide housing completions decreased 5.1% to 1,295,000 units in April of 2021 from 1,365,000 units in March of 2021, and fell 8.6% from 1,417,000 units in April of 2020. Single family completions lower 4.9% to a rate of 1,001,000 units in April of 2021, from 1,053,000 units in March of 2021, and there were 281,000 multifamily completions in April of 2021.
