No Connection but Families are Safe...Both of Them

Porch DamageStreet LightOn Saturday I wrote about Joe Smith in Nebraska and how, in the middle of dealing with tornado damage and concern for his family, he took the time to let me know why I didn't have email! Today I got an update and some photos. Fortunately, the damage to his home is repairable, though they have quite a mess to clean up.

Amid the damage was a precious example of new life and the ability of nature's creatures to survive. Joe had taken photos to document hail damage, and one of the shots showed a bird's next up under the eaves. When he went back the next day…there were three baby birds in the nest! Somehow, with all the wind and hail, that nest had protected them. Those marks on the siding are from golf sized hail!

Bird's NestNestlingsThe Smith family is settled back in and cleaning up, thankful for all the thoughts and prayers sent their way. And I'm thankful to have my email back…even though it meant more than 650 messages to go through!

Wow, Margaret! He did get some damage, but at least he has his family and these adorable little birds made it through! Thanks for letting us know. Now, I'm sure you have a lot of reading to do..

Linda, I have spent a good portion of the day catching up on emails. Amazed at how calm I have been. When I think of the disaster in Nebraska, no way am I going to be upset. Emails are not life and death. Sometimes we react like the connection or lack of is a disaster.

Margaret, I very much liked this post. It reminds us all to appreciate the little things in life. Like baby birds surviving a storm. Great photo of them by the way. As far as all your emails I don't know what to say. Be fast with the delete key??

Gary, Joe is the one who captured these special photos. In the midst of disaster, he found these survivors...the baby birds

Wow! That's wild the little birds were still there. Good to know Joe is safe along with his family too. Tornados damage random things sometimes.

Margaret - I'm always amazed at what survives - small birds, a beautiful flower, a teacup in the midst of a destroyed home. A soul.

Margaret, WOW, what a storm. Glad everyone is fine. How cute of the Robins who rode the storm out.

Lizette, Sharon and Duane, Did you see the hail damage next to those birds? That is so amazing?

Going to email Joe and see how he and the family are doing.

Here is the latest update from Joe.

"Margaret,We are fine. Thank you! We were actually out of town for a week. The insurance people came out and are going to replace our whole roof and our screened in porch, paint 3/4 of the house, paint the garage doors, and replace 2 computers that were DISTROYED when the power went down, up, down, up.... That is VERY hard on computers. Total damage to our house was about 40K, but thank God no personal injury..We did also have to replace batteries in our backup power for our datacenter.. All is 100% as are we...Hope all is well with you and Lee... Please thank all those kind people who are posting also... I am going to post in the next day or 2...Our love to all! Joe "

I'm glad to see both families are safe and well. Looks like everyone was very lucky, just don't think of hail being able to do that much damage, but we don't get the hail that you do!
