My Thoughts on the Uvalde, Texas Event

By

The horrific event this week here in Texas has no doubt, rocked each and every one of us. We have children and grandchildren, and we know teachers, principals, and staff members in all of our communities. This kind of event touches all of us.

As a current school board trustee in my little Texas town, having a 4th-grade son in school, and as a former teacher, my knees buckled when I began hearing about this event.  My thoughts of the teacher who was killed flood my mind knowing the position she was in as she valiantly shielded her students.

There are no answers to this kind of evil. This community will never be the same. The surviving students and teachers will be scarred emotionally and deeply.

What can we do as a nation? Well first, we can pray for this small community. And yes, prayer is essential. I had one of our fellow AR members post a comment on my FB page that said, "enough praying"! Well, I disagree. Prayer supersedes all time and space and it is something that is the only soothing balm many of us can turn to in times like this.

These kinds of shocking events rock our world. They affect people differently. I know that I have felt numb and exhausted these past few days. So how do we move forward? Here are a few heartfelt thoughts:

1. Love more! Show love every day to those around you. SMILE big! Open doors for others, pay it forward in a small way and offer a kind word to others.

2. Offer more kindness. Be kind with your words, show patience, and put yourself in someone else's situation as we never know what they are going through, by simply listening to another is a great way to show kindness.

3. Take care of yourself. Remember to not get so focused on the tragedies of this world that you forget to eat right, rest, take a walk, read a book, call a friend, or take a moment to just breathe.

May you all navigate these times leaning into one another. Blessings to you all. May you continue to fully LIV2DAY!

Good morning, Paula... what wonderful suggestions. I find it hard days later to think about these children without tears coming to my eyes.

I agree Miss Nina Hollander, Broker - my eyes welled up just writing my comment.  It does impact all of us. So incredibly sad.

Dr. Paula McDonald - I did not see the comment on FB. I spend very little time on that platform.  When I read the comment "enough praying" here ... my first thought was we need more than prayers.

Do we need all the things you suggest? Yes, Indeed. We. Do.

Absolutely. Keep Praying.  I've never known a prayer to hurt anyone. In fact. Just the opposite.

What happened is unthinkable yet it happened. My heart aches and the tears continue to flow. It is all so incredibly sad ... too much to take in all at once.

Do we need more to keep our nation safe?  Yes. Indeed We Do.

Prayers to restore the strength of our nation, protect us from evil, and keep us all safe.

UPDATED Comment:  Curiosity got the best of me.  I did go to your FB post and read the comment "enough praying" which was followed by we need to solve the problem and take action.  I agree. We need to take action.

Hi, Paula.

People react or respond to tragedies differently. We wouldn't know what it feels like to lose our friends and family members' precious lives to senseless causes. We can stay as "onlookers" and pray or reach out to offer our compassion to those affected.

Until we can be serious about stopping this madness, we continue to blame the opposite political parties/leaders for allowing this nonsense to become the "norm." And we continue to pray and tell others to look the other way!

Unfortunately, this carnage cannot be solved by our compassion alone. Thank you for this post.

This kind of news always leaves me in bewilderment.  What kind of sick cowardly person even thinks of something like this?  Much less acts it out.  Mark

Hi Paula I couldn't have said it any better. Words seem so empty in the midst of this horrific tragedy. I have noticed others being kinder, opening doors, smiling, saying a kind word getting a grocery cart for others, as I do often anyway but now even more so. Prayers go a long way towards helping us heal.  God Bless.

I think prayer is important, but only if it accompanied with meaningful action.  I have concerns that calls for prayer are being used as a diversion to what really needs to be done by we mere mortals!
