For those who gave it all: We need to Remember and Honor the brave...

Thank you Endre Barath, Jr.  I did not know the were poppies such  beautiful flowers and so hard to find a red poppy here on the east coast

Endre the freedom we enjoy comes with a very high price.  May we never take it for granted.

Endre I grew  up knowing what the meaning of Memorial Day was because of my parents and grandparents.  They also remembered family members they lost as well by placing flowers on their graves along with the soldiers that gave their live for our country. I remember poppies as a little girl -  people used to wear them on their coats.....that seems to have gone away over the years. We fly our flag high many days of the year and I'm looking forward to putting out all the smaller flags as well this weekend. We are blessed.

Thank you for this post. We held day 1 of our Field of Honor® event yesterday. Walking among 1,000 flags is an intense experience.

Good morning, Endre... I did know Memorial Day was called Decoration Day. In fact, I marched in a number of Decoration Day parades with my Girl Scout Troop in the 1950's. My mother referred to Memorial Day as Decoration Day till the day she died in 1998. I clearly remember many people wearing a red poppy on Decoration Day. I've been wishing to see the red poppy wall of honor at the National Mall first-hand. It looks amazing.

Hello Endre, My father would always call it Decoration Day and I remember the red poppy he would wear that day.  He even gave them out at the restaurant on that day!

It is always good to share the history of  Memorial Day and how it started.  Many get Veterans Day, and Armed Forces Day confused with Memorial Day.  I learned a lot when my son, a Marine Veteran, worked at Riverside National Cemetery.  It is Memorial Day there 365 days a year. He was there to help relatives get through their loss.

I learned the history of Memorial Day early with the passing of family members because of war. Thank you for the tribute to our American heroes Endre!

Endre Barath, Jr. - back in the day, we were taught history and the meaning behind Memorial Day plus families taught their children about the meaning behind Decoration Day. I remember it all and wrote a post about it this morning before commenting on other AR blog posts. Yours was great!

Hi Endre - I am so glad you reminded me to check your post.  How many know the story.  By the way the poem Flanders Field talks about the poppies decorating the graves of those who fell there in WWI.  In Armonk, our town would only do the parade and speeches on the 30th because they didn't want the long weekend to detract.  Both my daughters played in the band on the front lawn of the American Legion in Armonk.  The year after 9/11 we had a young recruit who went to Afghanistan speak.

As I say so often, we need to also remember the families, those who lost family members, but also those who had sons and daughters serving. Living with that stress daily whilst their family member is in harms way. Thank you for your post, and your service.
