May 24th was the birthday of Queen Victoria, who became Queen when she was only 18 years of age.
Victoria served as the longest reigning British Monarch, ruling from June 20, 1837 until her death in 1901. She married her first cousin Prince Albert, and bore him nine children, all of which married into royal families. Because of this, Queen Victoria became known as "The Grandmother of Europe". Unfortunately many of her heirs possessed and passed on the gene for hemophilia, a bleeding disorder.
Her reign of 63 years and seven months was longer than that of any of her predecessors and is known as the Victorian era. She was the last British monarch of the House of Hanover. Her heirs are of their father's house, originally known as the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. They later renamed it the House of Windsor due to post-World War anti-German sentiment.
On Victoria Day in Canada, the Royal Union Flag must be flown from sunrise to sunset at all federal government buildings, including airports, military bases, and other Crown-owned property across the country.
As the national flag of Canada always takes precedence over the royal union flag, the royal crown flag is only flown in places where a second flagpole exists.
