Wordless Wednesday…Where’d Everybody Go?

The other day Larry and I saw this lone goose in the parking lot at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve. We were not the only ones who were concerned for his/her safety.  Even though the speed limit is maybe 20 mph, we were all concerned that he/she might be hit.

This is not the first time we’ve seen a lone goose. A few years ago, the Preserve had several geese that had to be relocated to a private individual’s acreage where geese were welcome.

One was left behind even though the Preserve attendants tried to capture it and reunite it with its flock.  Every morning walkers heard what sounded like it was saying…" hey…where is everyone?   I’m by myself. "

I have no idea what happened to that goose but I hope that this goose will be able to join his/her flock soon.

I did learn that geese are monogamous. They may stay behind if something has happened to their mate or if they are injured.  Here are more interesting facts about geese.

I actually know quite a bit about geese and you are spot on with your knowledge Kathy Streib . On a recent bike ride in our neighborhood I was amazed at all the goslings. This means they must have been sat on by mom and day even through our late spring blizzard. It's hard to imagine.

Hi Kathy,
It sounds like some humans could learn a bit about mating for life! LOL   When we lived on the river we had lots of geese feasting on our acre of lawn. Now I know more about geese than I ever did back then.

Hello Kathy - thanks for sharing some tips for geese.  It's still kinda early so I can avoid any fowl territory.

Hi Kathy,

I hope that lone goose is relocated with a flock.  Hopefully, it didn't lose a mate that would be sad.

We occasionally see a lone goose on the small lagoon where we walk, most days up to the end of April there are lots of geese, always seems odd to see just one alone.

Yes we see this on occasion as well Kathy.  Not with geese (as I've never seen one here) but rather birds and other little critters.

So sad to think of it all alone in search of his/her mate.

Wayne Martin the only thing about geese that I'm not fond of is what they leave behind, if you get my drift.

Kat Palmiotti it's kind of sad. A few years ago we kept hoping someone would rehome the goose that was left behind.

Sham Reddy CRS it's admirable but sad too.

Cindy Edwards I love birds too.  We've never seen geese with their babies around, but that would be fun.

Nina Hollander, Broker I say the same thing as well. There's a lady who is in the area and I've heard that she will accept geese if they need to be relocated.

Bill Salvatore - East Valley I love watching them walk around.

Roy Kelley I'd rather see photos of your beautiful flowers.

Brian England I hope so. It's so sad when you see an animal hurt or on its own.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX Thank you!  We have all kinds of other birds there but no geese. He must have come from somewhere else.

Bob "RealMan" Timm mama birds go through a lot when they have eggs and then the chicks to feed.

Carol Williams I'll bet they were fun to watch. I think swans mate for life as well.

Kathy I would not get to close to the goose, they can get aggressive.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I hope so too. Earlier this year, our mama bluebird disappeared just days before the hatchlings were supposed to fledge. That night daddy bluebird was calling for a new sweetie...who arrived the next day.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I remember seeing a huge flock when we were in Leesburg. I'd never seen that many.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker when we were in Delray and went dolphin (mahi-mahi) fishing , if you came across a school of dolphin and caught one, if you left that hooked dolphin in the water, the others would not leave him. That's how you caught others.   It was sad.

Sharon Tara it really is, and I'm the kind of person who will cry over something this, or any animal that's harmed.

Also when geese are flying if one becomes ill or tired and leaves the flight, two other geese will fly down to the ill goose and wait until the goose is better or dies.
