How Old Is Your Computer? ..."In Computer years"

Is it time for a new computer? Are you sure? When did you buy your current computer, or when was the last time you did any upgrades? Do you constantly find yourself waiting on the computer instead of it waiting on you?
Have you calculated (like dog years) how old your computer really is? (5 years to 1)
Laptop
These are the questions I found myself asking, as I was patronizing the computer department at a local Best Buy store. Once I took a good look at some of the systems that are now available, I was no longer there to just get milk and eggs. (ha ha) But, there are so many choices and decisions that need to be made (I thought), when buying a new computer. Things like Network Capabilities, Speed and Memory, Gigabytes and Kilobytes etc. Just the thought of trying to understand 1/4 of the technobabble these days, could really make someone nauseous and cause them (like me) to procrastinate! Really, you just need to be honest with yourself, and decide what you'll need your computer to do. The AR network is here to help you too!

Broken ComputerA new computer is somewhat like a new car, It smells good, it's faster than the old one, the paint and appearance is much better, it's clean, no scratches, doesn't leak, and makes you proud, as it gets you to where you are going. Alot of similarities between a new car and and new computer. However, just like a car, we don't need to understand all the mechanics of it, we just want it to do, what it was meant to do. The technology in a new car has definitely changed over 20 years! I'd have to say the same for a new computer. Old Mac Donald

If it has been 2-3 years or more since your last purchase, I'd say it's time to go to your local computer store (or on-line), and really see what has changed in the past few years with technology and software. Are you running applications like I was, that for example, were created for Windows 98? Or maybe, you have software like I do that is up to 6.0, and you thought you were running the best, only to find that the developer's have changed hands, and they're now up to version 12.0? You will be SHOCKED at what's on the market right now.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                     (OLD MAC DONALD)

All that to say this, I broke down and bought a new computer after 5 years of living with mediocrity. I am really loving this new computer. It's so fast! I just picked up the HP m7760n, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, with 500GB HD, 2GB RAM, the new Intel Viiv Technology, Lightscribe CD/DVD burner, the Accelerator 950 gra(OLphics card, and Windows Vista. (and I haven't even opened the trunk on this baby yet)

brads fast red car
This new computer screams! It was half the price for what I paid for my old system over 5 years ago.  It's nice to have a computer that once again, waits on me instead of the other way around. What more could a blogger ask for? The new computers now days, have so much more "NEW" technology, power, speed, capabilities, and are much easier to use. (referring to new software too) I'm glad I didn't just upgrade, I'm glad I bought brand new! Some words of advice if you do buy a new car...I mean a new computer...Better fasten your seatbelt, hang-on, cause you're going for a ride! Go buy one today, life is too short, technology is too fast, just do it, you deserve it!

Hi Brad - you're right, it is amazing how much more you can get today in computers and other technology tools for so much less than it used to cost.  I bought 2 new laptops less than a year ago, and they were loaded and I was really amazed at the prices compared to the laptop I had bought several years before that.

Love your last line - "Go buy one today, life is too short, technology is too fast, just do it, you deserve it!"

Hi Brad, my desktop is in it's second yr. My laptop is about 4 yrs. and my wifes is a little over a year and a half. Technology does change very quickly and it's doesn't take long to find out our equipment is outdated. I can only imagine what technology will be like in 2020. Our generation is so much fun with all the new toys available just about every 3-6 months. Can't wait for the next great thing.

I have to agree with you Brad ...as soon as we recover from last years change in the market I am going to get one..might be next year.I hate putting it off.

Jay, it is too early in the morning, I thought you said your WIFE is a little over a year and a half!

Last year, when the power unit went out of my NEW computer (new in 2003), I had the RAM increased which changed its life.

It still seems like the 'new' computer, even though I've had it longer than the previous one which was only a 4 gig hard drive and 64 RAM.  It was quick and my computer guy kept saying  you don't need a new computer.  I and friends let him stall us because we didn't want to move stuff!  What stuff on those little computers?  It all had toa be on disk anyway.

I feel like I am still getting comfortable with XP even though I've had that longer that I had Windows 98.  When buying something new, it isn't necessary to go right into Vista, but buy something that is "vista compatible" which the really cheap deals right now may not be.

I messed up my wireless router, so have to have the computer guy come and fix that, expand the internal network and since this is a new computer guy, I'm going to ask him about upgrading.  i at least want a bigger monitor.  I'm a small gear person, always looking for the little toys. As long as the big one runs, I am inclined to forget how old we both are getting.

Brad my computer is just about a year.  I do like to keep up with the latest technology however I hate getting rid of things if they work,

I was convinced when I began my Real Estate career one year ago that my computer was fine (circa '95). My computer was convinced otherwise.  It couldn't support high speed so I reluctantly bought a new one - but WOW! What a difference!  I've kept my old one as backup and have had to use it occasionally - for old times sake.

New 'puters are great ... But sometimes, sometimes hanging on to older versions of software programs is good, too.  I can't tell you how many times I've tried a new version of something ... then went back to a previous version because the new one is just too "dumbed down" and/or overbloated with useless stuff...

I still use a blend of old and new... One of the desktops is about 6 months old and I still fire up a 10 year old lap top while sitting in front of the TV.... It gives me plenty of time to think of comments....

I wish I had kept my old, cheap E Machine!  It's been one of the 5 or 6 computers I've bought in the past and despite the Dell with everything in it (and more!), I swear it worked better!!  Now it's time for a new one, I was told to get HP this time.

03/14/2007 08:31 AM by Carole Provenzale Owner, Feng Shui Long Island & New York (Feng Shui Long Island & New York City)

Carole brings up a good point. I recently bought a new Dell notebook for my wife and the amount of junk that Dell loads onto them is amazing, and don't try asking for one without it, Dell makes a fortune by  charging to add these programs.

Most of them are trial versions just to convince you to buy them. If you aren't well versed in computers, getting rid of these programs is a daunting task. So your best bet may be to spend a little extra to have a computer built from scratch to your specs.

I have a desktop that I built around 2 years ago and it was the latest and greatest. Well now with vista out I'm not sure how well it will handle the new operating system. I still think I'll wait till the first service pack for Vista comes out before I look to buy a new desktop.

Thanks Brad, I have owned computers since the old Commodore years (now I'm showing my age!).  One of my associates just purchased a new computer with the new Microsoft Office 2007 and his assistant had to close the door so no one could hear her scream about all the problems.  The assistant said Word documents have to be converted over and she didn't know that.  She spent 2 1/2 hours revising an old Word documents and then went to save the changes and her document disappeared!  She was so angry.  After hours of trying to figure out what went wrong she finally found out that all her old Word documents have to be converted to the new version of Word.  There is button she has to click in the upper left hand corner of the screen that can barely be seen to convert her old Word documents.  She says the overall learning curve for Office 2007 is incredible and one better go get a technology degree before opting for Office 2007!  Another problem we have is that our MLS still does not support Vista so my associate friend had to order his computer with Explorer Professional and had to work hard to find a manufacturer that would still sell him a computer without Vista!   I am going to wait before I purchase my 13th computer, LOL

Excellent points made in the comments above!! As you can see, everyone is at different levels of computer experience and knowledge, while I have to agree with alot of the issues that come with a new computer, I have always been the one to "take the arrows" of pioneering something new. I guess that it's guys like me that will help work out the kinks for those who choose to wait. Granted that Windows Vista does have some compatability issues with older applications, and new computers come with alot of junk on them, it still is something we all have to do sooner or later. Change is inevitable! Look at the change in our industry over the past 5 - 10 years. Unfortunately, we don't have the opportunity to wait for the bugs to get worked out in our marketplaces. We just have to adapt, embrace, and go forward with new ideas, tools, and creative ways of getting around the things we don't like or understand. Thanks for all the great comments, it nice to see the support we have on Activerain. On a side note, the support I have received from HP, Microsoft, and the applications I am running has been excellent!! Doesn't mean that frustrations and anxieties aren't still present. ie: I still can't get my HP 952C printer to work with my new HP computer...go figure..  :-)

My computer starting singing today. (Maybe humming - Just dont sound right)

I'm using my laptop for all my work today, while I am backing up my hard drive before my computer pushes out the blue smoke. My wife jokes that the blue smoke is what makes computers work. She figures that once you see the blue smoke coming out of the back that is when the computer stops working. So to her it is clear that computers work because they have blue smoke, once they lose the blue smoke they quit.

Brad - my laptop is still pretty young, but it already feels like it is aging quickly, and I just got it a year ago. I am waiting on VISTA as I have heard there are some significant issues. What really drives me nuts are all the updates I get - and does it really make a difference with each one? Are they just having fun creating new updates every few days? Why don' they do it right the first time? LOL

Thanks for your post. have fun with your new friend.

Good information and you are so right to post it too.  We all need to keep an eye on what's new in the world of technology and keep current.  I'm so glad I have Bob to look after what's new and necessary in our technical department.

I wait for about 3-5 years and buy technology that is JUST a little dated..in other words I buy a NEW older computer....

BTW I can STILL upgrade my current system and get MORE speed and productiuvity out of it.... so I am NOT buying a new system just yet....

IT STILL screams compared to my old system when I buy the new system, BUT I do NOT pay through the nose for it......instead of paying $1800.00 or MORE for a brand new system that is OLD in 3 years.......I'll pay about $600-900 for a used system that is faster than my old system and can be upgraded later....

Just like a NEW used car a couple of years old.....

hehehehe....

Just a quick note regarding my earlier comment about my HP Printer not working with my new HP HotRod computer, IT WORKS NOW!!!! YEAH! I guess without the small challenges we face in technology, we wouldn't have these little victories and celebrations! HP worked with me via email for 2 days to get it worked out, and now....I CAN PRINT! Great support from HP! WooHoo, Yipee...ok, maybe that's a little too much celebration....  :-)

These days it seems that a better, faster computer is introduced into the market before you can unwrap your own computer. Thank you

03/15/2007 05:13 AM by Better Day Financial (under construction)

The average time on new technology for computers is every 2 years. If it's been more than 2 years since your last purchase and you do a comparison check of systems similar to your own, you will find the prices going lower and the speed and space going higher. Graphic technology is one area that seems to change by leaps and bounds. If you don't have the newest graphic card you may be limited in what you can do, depending on the age of your pc. Many times you can simply upgrade your own computer rather than sinking money into buying a new one. Memory is the best place to put the money first to make your computer run faster other than a good spring cleaning.

For internet technology, I can't stress the benefits of wireless broadband enough. I have 4 pc's and a lappie running off one router box in my house without the use of wires everywhere. Networking them together means you can use just one printer for all.

Brad, did it feel like walking through a toy store? LOL...

Well, after commenting on the blog yesterday. I start up my desktop at home and started surfing the web all of a sudden blue screen of death pops up. I tried everything to get my computer working again but nothing I think it is done. The bad thing it have alot of my flyer templates and letter templates on it. Usually I'm really good on backing things up but I got lazy and have not backed up anything in about 4 months. Now I'm all stressed out thinking about everything I'm going to lose. I guess this  is a sign to upgrade to a new computer. Until I upgrade I will be working real hard to figure a way out to retreive the data I might have lost. With external hard drives so cheap I will be getting one right away.

Brad,   Good stuff here.

Regarding Vista...There are integration issues with Some MLS/Paragon systems and Vista.  Anytime new operating systems or major upgrades are initiated, you can expect configuration problems and glitches!!

For those of you who want to upgrade your 1 year old laptop.....that is a waste of resources.  Stay with what you have, which is all you really need.  Wait at least one more year, and get today's top of the line at rock bottom prices..

Maureen, don't be afraid. It is preference that counts. Both computers do great things, you want to be sure it will do those things you need in your business. Mac actually has an application that will run and make your computer like a PC running windows. There are great features and benefits to both. I would start by making a list of all the things you want to ba able to do with your computer. Then make sure there are no compatability issues, then do some research on pricing, and then just go buy it. You work hard, you need the tool, and you deserve it!! You decide what you like best and then just be good to yourself. If I can help you any further, please let me know. There are thousands here on AR that I am sure would do the same. Best of luck to you, either way, it'll be the right choice. DON'T BE AFRAID!!!

Hi Brad,

I actually work on computers (troubleshoot, repair, upgrade, train, network, etc.) so I can appreciate each and every comment here.

Yeah, a lot of people still hang on to their old Windows 98 operating system computer for whatever reason, instead of at least upgrading to Windows XP or now, Windows Vista.  Upgrading can be like taking baby steps, pretty scary.

Computers are definitely a love / hate or shall I say, dislike, relationship, which we have come to depend on more so these days.

Happy computing everyone!

Good afternoon Kathleen,

You won't be missing out if you don't get Vista.  It might even make life easier.......A good portion of people don't like it and a good portion do.  It's a preference issue. Vista does have bugs, quirks, annoying screen popups, etc.  There are also issues with compatibility on hardware and software (printers, scanners, cameras).  Let a year go by so the dust can settle, then consider Vista. If you have the choice, stay with Windows XP.

Hope this helps!

It's crazy how we need to keep up with our computers now.  My first computer I got for free from a former employer, did all of the repairs and upgrades myself.  Then I bought my new one almost 1 year ago or so, I love it, no more waiting, no more frustration, etc...  Until the next big, new thing comes around!

Kathleen - It's just the next MS Op system.  They're always trying to improve!  It's preference in my opinion.  Being a techie kinda guy, I always want the newest and latest and greatest to be able to help my friends and clients.  However, that does not mean that it is the right operating system for you.  There are bugs that I've heard about, but I have not yet experienced any of them.  I have all new hardware and up to date software that is setup for windows Vista.  You might want to wait a bit, check with others who have Vista, play on their computers for a bit, then decide if it's right for you.  You can also go into any computer store to see how Windows Vista looks and feels, I know they let people play on it before they buy!  :-)
