Wordless Wednesday…What a Trip

If you haven’t seen this month’s Ole Glory Coast to Coast June ActiveRain Challenge, you’re missing out on some inspiring photos of our flag flying proudly across the states.

It made me think about something we saw in 2014 when we were taking our morning walk along Delray Beach.

These “boats” were dropped from a ship just offshore at the “3-mile limit.” From there they made their way to our beaches.

We often heard helicopters from our home off the Intracoastal as they searched for those who came ashore.

I will never forget that small metal flag at the back of the boat.

Kathy, you have to wonder if anyone was on those boats, and where they were.

Wayne Martin I was told that it was very organized. There were people onshore to provide clothing and transportation. If you think about it, all of us at the beach often look like we just got out of the water and walked up the beach.

Nina Hollander, Broker We've been out on our boat in 3 to 4 foot seas and that was not comfortable at all. I can't imagine being in that or worse in a boat that looked like that.

Kat Palmiotti I heard that some people were there to provide clothes for them but I have no idea. I'd imagine they had no control over when they were dropped off either, so who knows what the seas were like.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 Sometimes we'd see news footage of them walking along A1A by the beach.

Grant Schneider one of the things I loved about the beach. You never knew what or who you'd see.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 you're right, we've been out 3+ miles but in a larger boat and sturdier too.

Joan Cox It was not unusual to see them walking along A1A (the road by the beach) just before they were picked up.

What an interesting story Kathy.  It really made me think about people making their 'arrival' in the new country by rowing in 3 miles in the ocean in what doesn't even seem to be a navigable boat. Desire was/is strong.

My grandparents took a trip that lasted weeks to become legal American citizens. It is something that I will always be grateful for Kathy! It is unfathomable to think of living in any other country, we have it made here.

What was the purpose of dropping off the boats, and then searching for them?  I'm asking for a friend!🙂

Hi Kathy,

What an exciting post.  I am sure you have seen a lot of interesting things wash up on shore but this is very special.

Hi Kathy:

I can't even imagine a journey of any distance on the open ocean in a boat like that. Love the photos and the inspiration!

George Souto once you start looking you see that they're everywhere.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker where Larry's hunting lease was in South Texas, they would cross over the border and travel at night in thick brush and it was so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of you. Larry said they would give them food and water when they saw them but they also slept with guns.

I agree!  Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! I am so grateful to both sets of grandparents for making their way here.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS These were undocumented people who wanted to enter our country. Still- quite the trip.

Myrl Jeffcoat they were illegals, many from Haiti, trying to enter the country. They were dropped offshore because the ship was "safe" just beyond the 3 mile limit which put them in international waters. From there, they made their way, if they could, to our shores and hoped not to be caught. This is my understanding.

faye schubert think how lucky we are!!!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® the whole time we lived in FL we'd heard of boats coming ashore and from our house just off the Intracoastal, we would hear helicopters looking for them. This was the first time we'd seen one of the boats.
