How about a little blues to brighten your day? Today’s song is a classic blues song and video filmed for the movie The Blues Brothers. The Blues Brothers movie employed some great music and big-name musicians like Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and John Lee Hooker.
The song Boom, Boom recorded by John Lee Hooker has been a classic blues standard since its release in 1962. The song charted on both the Billboard Hot R&B list and the Billboard Hot 100.
In this video The Blues Brothers production team recreated the old Maxwell Street market in Chicago. That open-air market at one time was a bustling place where you could buy anything imaginable (much of it used or stolen). As a boy my father and uncle took me to the market on Sunday mornings. Even though we never bought anything, it was always a memorable outing. I don’t recall seeing John Lee Hooker, but there were always a few street performers entertaining the crowd. My dad and uncle did not live long enough to see The Blues Brother movie, but I am sure they would have gotten a kick out of the Maxwell Street scene.
John Lee Hooker’s testimonials include induction into the Blues Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was a recipient of a 1983 National Heritage Fellowship awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts. He was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. Not bad for the son of a sharecropper.
So even though they call it the blues, it won’t make you blue. It may even bring a smile to your face.
