The St. Paul Neighborhoods Wiki

Last week I launched the St. Paul neighborhood wiki.  Very much a work in progess, lets call it beta. The idea came from my buyers who are relocating.  Our fair city has 17 districts and 127 neighborhoods, and 13 MLS districts.  This all creates a lot of confusion, so I am trying to organize the entire mess over time to make it easier.

Wiki's are designed to be collaborative. The neighborhood pages can be edited by anyone with an account.  Assuming I have the security set up correctly, anyone can create an account on their own and I will be notified via email that they have. I am using media wiki, the same software that wikipedia is on, and am hosting it on my own server.

It took a few weeks between the time I loaded the software until I was able to set anything up. I found the online help to be cryptic and ended up asking for help.  I asked several people and no one really seemed to have a handle on how to start such a wiki.  My questions were mostly about structure, such a wiki has to have a logical structure,

The next steps include putting instructions in the on-line help section, getting all 127 neighborhoods listed with a section on average home values and marketing the wiki so that people know about it and can find it.  It is linked into my blog, which is getting a kind of makeover, and has a new menu bar across  the top.

If there are any Active Rain members who have experience with media wiki, I would appreciate any advice I can get.

Wow, I'm jealous.  I thought about doing the same thing here in Northwest Indiana, but as I am still getting blogging down, postponed the project.  I'll be watching though, hope to get there eventually.

Now this is a REALLY great idea.  This will be the type of content that lasts for years, Teresa.

So much to do, so little time!   What a cool idea.  How do you keep the competition from messing with it?  Do you have control over that?

Linda - Persons wishing to modify the wiki need to sign in.  It is possible to undo an individuals modifications.  The wiki is backed up so that it can be restored from a previous version if nessecary.  I had difficulty setting up the structure and I am not sure I want to do it again so the basic from as seen on the front page can only be changed by me.  Persons wishing to edit neighborhood or sub nieghborhood pages can.  I like to ssume that a competitor would be honorable and not wreck it.  I guess there is an element of trust in this.  Some one could write something nasty in it and it would take me awhile to zap it but I would have an electronic trace so I could find out who it was.

Steve - this is an expriement, after a couple of months this is how far I have gotten.  I could play with it for hours if I had the time.  At this point I don't know what it will do for my business.

Brain - thanks for stopping by.

"Boomer" complained to me that you were playing with your wiki. Until nowI really thought he was telling me stuff I really didn't want to know!

Jay, that's funny.  T does need her private wiki time.

T- You've given me a lot of new ideas with this.  If you struggled with it for a couple of months, I just know I'm going to lose sleep over it.

be careful

THe True wikipedians are very hostile at promoting businesses.  Some of theses guys/gals are very particular about how and what you put into wikipedia.  Make sure you conceal your intention if you are promoting your blog and thus you.

Good Luck

Christopher - this is not wekapedia, I am just using the same software so it is unrelated and merely a wiki that could stand on any platfrom.

Lisa - not worth losing sleep over.  I'll let you know what kind of results it gets.  If it takes too much time and does not produce results I won't hesitate to use the delete key.

Very interesting Teresa.  Today I had the same idea for something like this in my own area. So I searched AR to see if anyone is doing something like this.  I like what you are doing and I will check back in the future to see how the idea is evolving for you.
