The stock market's moving in a downward direction, the housing market looks like it's following the stocks, and we all need to save where ever we can in order to purchase our next tank of gas. However, when faced with the big decisions in life don't take the cheap way out, seek good counsel. These decisions can be, often are, life changing. Get a good, third party involved who can provide insight into the situation.

Whether it's purchasing a new(er) home, understanding the legal implications of a complex contract, the deductibility of a particular expense, or the proper allocation of investment dollars, in the long run, it pays to pay a knowledgeable professional for their advice.

You may already know who you'd call in an emergency. If you do, that's great. Take a few minutes to reconnect with them, refresh their memory with your name, or better yet with your face. When it's crunch time, it's always helpful when the person you are calling actually knows, and remembers, you.

If, on the other hand, you don't already at least know who your go-to person is, take some time, when not faced with one of those big decisions, to develop some good relationships with people in the various professions (attorney, real estate agent, accountant/CPA, etc.) Ask your friend or family for the names of the people they use or that they would recommend.

Until you find professionals who are knowledgeable, in their respective field, and with whom you are comfortable, continue looking. There are many, many professionals of the various stripes. There is no reason to settle for something with which you're not comfortable.
