Rethinking How You Recharge

Let's talk about recharging. A lot of people think that there are a couple of ways to recharge from the stress of work. It's either going on vacation or taking time off at home. Those are possible ways to recharge, but there are lots of other things that can recharge people and it is different for each of us. What might recharge one person drains another.

Even if you consider vacations, different people recharge differently while on their vacations. Some people just want to lie on the beach and do nothing, while others want to be more active. When I am on vacation, I want to explore everything my destination has to offer: the sights, the sounds, the food and culture!

Maybe that seems strange, but we're all wired a little differently. This is a big deal because, in order to figure out what gives you that quality-of-life experience, you have to figure out what recharges you. Yes, magazines and websites can offer lots of ideas, but there are no rules for official recharging activities. Keep this in mind with your friends and co-workers, too. What may be recharging for them might sound boring or exhausting to you, and vise-versa.

Time-off is supposed to be about recharging. For me, the things that recharge me the most are the things I can't do while I'm working. That can include visiting people that I really miss, like family or friends. It could also be as simple as getting something in my house reorganized. Some of my favorite things to do involve getting out of the office and going for a hike or a boat ride with my husband. Taking in the beautiful scenery and landscape at my own pace is very satisfying.

We all have different batteries. Some people find that people give them energy. Other people find that people drain their energy. Recharging is critical for you to be the best you can be in your business and personal life. It's different for everyone, so it is very important to learn what works best for you.

"But Denise, how do I find ways recharge that work for me?"

First, ask yourself if you need to recharge physically or mentally. For me, when I need to mentally recharge, sometimes what I really need is time to be still and quiet. That could be out in the forest or in my favorite chair with a good book. Other times I need to do something creative to stretch my brain in new ways and get out of my rut.

Mental Recharging

Here are some ideas for mental recharging you can try out:

  • Read a book.
  • Cook something new or your favorite food.
  • Listen to music or play an instrument.
  • Write some poetry or a short story.
  • Paint or draw.
  • Play or cuddle with your pets.
  • Visit a fountain, waterfall, or waterfront.
  • Visit the forest, an arboretum, or garden.
  • Do your hobbies, or pick up a new one.
  • Organize that closet or junk drawer that has been driving you nuts.

Physical Recharging

When I need to recharge physically, that can mean resting or doing more physical things. Sitting behind a desk does not count as rest - even though you're not physically doing very much. Sometimes you have to use up some stale energy so you can fill up on fresh energy. Here are some ideas for physical recharging you can try:

  • Nap or (if you're not sleepy) lie down and close your eyes.
  • Stretch or do some yoga.
  • Take a walk or a hike.
  • If you have a garden, go dig in the dirt or pull some weeds.
  • Go to the gym or take a swim.
  • Explore a new place.
  • Visit a friend or family member.

Here's a secret tip to recharging: You don't have to be productive or "good" or original at any of the things you do to recharge. You don't have to share anything, either. Your recharge cycle is not a side-hustle or part-time job. It's your time to relax and rejuvenate yourself, so protect it accordingly.

I really want to encourage you to find those things that bring you joy and make you feel better. It's important for your physical and mental health, as well as your business performance. Get to know yourself and make a plan for recharging regularly. Put it in your calendar as a non-negotiable appointment. You are not allowed to change or re-schedule it. It is with yourself and your family, and that is a priority.

As we move into the summer months, think about how and when you recharge so you can always have enough energy to keep doing the amazing work you do every day.

If we find ourselves losing track of time when we are doing something (non-work related), that's quite possibly a good recharger. I find when I'm puttering in my garden I don't look at my watch or my phone. I always feel recharged after spending time out there. Your ideas above are all great ones to try.

HI Denise- what works for one may not work for others. Good point, Denise, we have to find what recharges us and then do it. When I was in grad school, working in my garden was what I needed. It shifted my focus from studying something totally different.
