HOW DOES YOU LEADERSHIP MEASURE UP?

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

There are some fundamental qualities of all effective leaders. Here are seven habits seen in effective leaders. Proper business leadership is crucial to the success of any business of any size. No company can be more successful than the effectiveness of its leaders. If the head of a company lacks positive leadership qualities, he or she will be unsuccessful motivating and leading the staff. This in turn will result in lost customers and business opportunities.

Leadership is complex and what works well in one environment may not be a good fit for another. When a leader is focused on results he or she will adapt to the environment. However, just as there are habits of highly successful people there are also habits of highly successful leaders.   Here are seven habits of highly effective leaders.

A Leader always does the right thing. That is one of the principles of Dave Thomas who founded Wendy’s.   The leader has a high code of ethics.

A Leader has the vision. Clearly stated, the leader must have a clear-cut idea of where he or she wants to go. Suppose you want to go to Hawaii for vacation and you go to the airport to buy a ticket. What if the screen said that the flight will take off heading east, and then when reaching cruising altitude, it might turn south for a while and then head west? Would you fly? The leader, therefore, must know where the team or the organization is going or there will be no one to lead.

A Leader must have passion. No one would buy from a person who is tentative about the company product or service. A leader must believe in himself or herself, the vision, and the mission. If someone finds himself spinning the wheels in his mind over and again the team certainly knows it. An effective leader knows WHY before he or she knows HOW.

A Leader must be real. Leadership isn't just what we do, it's something that we are, which then drives what we do. Genuine leadership comes from within. It's authentic, and based on honesty, integrity, and trust. We must ring true to ourselves by exploring our inner space, gathering feedback on our personal behavior, and ensuring consistency with our stated values and principles.

Body Language in Message

A Leader stays focused on the goal. Not only does a good leader view a situation as a whole but is able to break it down into sub parts for closer inspection. Not only is the goal in view but a good leader can also break it down into manageable steps and make progress towards it.

A Leader stays on course in uncertainty. In time of turbulence people look to the leader for cue. The leader stays calm and reassuring.

A Leader sets the standards. The good leader not only maintains high standards, but also is proactive in raising the bar to achieve excellence.

If people were following my leadership, I would hope that they would openly share their opinions whether they believe I would agree or disagree with them.

Great post, Grant. I've long believed that you can teach someone management skills, but leadership skills are something more innate and much hard to teach.

Grant I agree with all the things a leader is, except I question the first one.

"A Leader always does the right thing."

I believe a good leader always TRIES to do the right thing, but they are human and fall short sometimes.

Hi Grant,

Of course, this is a great list to use to hone in on leadership skills.  As a leader, one must be able to look at the different generations and decides what works best to motivate them.  I really believe that a leader also knows how to best train and support each employee or team member and when coaching vs counseling should be used.

Joan - awesome.  I am so happy that connected with a like minded person.

Joe - thank you.  Have a great week.

George - some nuance to my statement.  That was one of Dave Thomas' sayings  Do The Right Thing.

Sheri - with Millennials dominating the workforce I have learn plenty about connecting to that generation.

Roy - thanks, you too.

Leadership takes many forms. Personality is an important quality, their strengths, and their business culture Grant. Some don't have these important traits.

Hi Grant-all good traits of what a leader is. Something I would add is that a good leader is comfortable with who they are and therefore are more comfortable in helping others to get ahead. They want to see their employees succeed.
