Del Mar Horse Races Opening Day

No doubt horse racing fans are thrilled the annual thoroughbred racing season is coming soon at the Del Mar Race Track for 2022. Indeed, Opening Day is just 1 week from this Friday.
Thoroughbred racing at the Del Mar Race Track July 22nd at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar, and will run through Sunday September 11th. In general racing will take place Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But here’s the calendar of races.
Horse racing at Del Mar is a very popular summer event for area residents and visitors, with fans coming from around Southern California, and beyond. Thoroughbred racing has been popular at the Del Mar race track for decades, with big crowds, and plenty of famous, not famous, and maybe even infamous, people.
Many know that Del Mar thoroughbred racing has been a favorite scene to see Hollywood celebrities and other glitterati; once can expect the 2022 Del Mar Races will be the same, especially on Opening Day!
Opening Day at the Del Mar Race Track includes the popular “Opening Day Hats Contest.” You can show off your hat in the Plaza de Mexico between 12:00 and 3:00 pm. There is no entry fee. All that’s needed is a great hat, and terrific clothes to show it off!
Cash prizes totaling more than $4000 will be awarded in 4 categories: Most Glamorous, Best Racing Theme, Best Fascinator, and Best Flowers.
Race time is typically 2 pm and gates open 2 hours earlier. Admission tickets must be purchased in advance (they include general parking). Be aware that only vehicles with all passengers holding tickets for that day will be allowed to park.
A shorter horse racing season was added a few years ago, and in 2022 it’s from November 11th through December 4th.
You must purchase Del Mar Race Track tickets online in advance.
Plan on heavy traffic when traveling the 5 freeway, and on the Coast Road, as well as on major side streets like Via de la Valle, especially on opening day, in addition to the summer crowds in the Del Mar area in general.
