Mililani Town was voted the All America City in 1986 and it is the only community in Hawaii to ever receive this distinction.

My parents bought their new home in Mililani in 1971 and I was just starting high school. To this day my mom still lives in the same house and my son and daughter grew up in that same house too. From Kindergarten to High School the Mililani Community and Schools served us well. My children just came back home within the past two years and help my mom (who just turned 80 in January of this year) out.

With 7...yes SEVEN Recreation Centers there is fun for all ages! (Recreation Center #7 just opened on the Mililani Mauka side of Miliani) Starting from Tiny Tots (18 mos. to 3 years) there is circle time, arts and crafts. Then there is Tai Chi, Karate, Yoga, Self Defense and even learning the Hula (Hawaiian Dance) for all ages. There is Movie Night and Teen Night and all sorts of fun so get in on the socializing with the community!

With a variety of programs around the Mililani Community the latest addition is the NEW Mililani Town Association Senior Citizens Club Program!  Held Monday through Fridays everyone will be meeting at the Recreation Center #2 for an hour and the following classes will rotate each day:

  • Sit & Fit:  Slow, simple and easy exercises! Using chairs for standing and sitting support, the use of hand held weights and elastic tubing with handles, these simple excercises will surely keep you active and fit!
  • Walking Group:  Let's go for an outdoor walk around the Mililani Town Community!
  • Water Walking:  A really great way to exercise, this class uses water as resistance with aqua bells, noodles and joggers. Cool off while keeping fit as a fiddle!
  • Hula-robics:  Fun with the Art of Hula (Hawaiian Dance) while doing the basic moves of the Hula.
  • Activity Day:  A variety of activities such as crafts, bingo days, excursions, guest speakers, dances, coffee hours,
    potlucks and much more.

Call the MTA Admin Office at 623-7300 to be put on the class list. When there is enough interest you will be notified by the Recreation Manager and classes will begin!

Days:    Monday thru Friday
Times:  10 am to 11 am
Place:   Recreation Center 2
Fee:     $35 with valid MTA ID card
               $40 with valid MTA sponsor

Hi Sally,

Sounds like a nice community for young and not so young. Nice to know that those responsible for development have a keen eye for everyone's needs.

Glad your Mom still lives there and is able to enjoy her home and viisit her grandchildren as they do some chores for her.

Sally, seven recreation centers for a town of that size is impressive. Always looks like there is something fun to do.

Teri: Yeah...that's why we have smaller homes..no need for basements or a bunch of room to romp in winter...when we can do it all outside!

Hal: It has been a planned community since the late sixty's.....and just recently have finished their building....  Before they both moved back to Hawaii ..my hubbie and I had to go do her yard and help with the inside...while she worked and played golf...and went to Vegas...lol!

Gary: The last one just opened...so there are now 6 pools of the 7 rec centers.

Sally:

Recreation centers add so much value to a community adn to the residents who live there, and benefti from the programs and activities.  You are fortunate to have so many for folks to take advantage of.

Sally, Do you have to be a senior to join?  I would enjoy those activities, I love to walk and workout in the water!  (Maybe I can lie about my age to get in :)

Hi Sally,

Lot's of good local info on this one. Your mom looks great! BTW, we too still have a "family home" same house since 1959. The same one we all lived in together and I think most of the grandkids have lived there too at least for a short stay. It's sort of the old homestead.

Fran: Our home is a circus :)

Jeff: They sure do ...and with Mililani it became a huge community and needed a lot of activities to continue on as the "All American Community". :)

Sally I am like your Mom.  I bought my house in 1981 and still live here.  I do not move much and hate the thought of the day that I will have to pack up everything in this place and move.

George: I stopped trying to convince her to downgrade a long time ago. She's happy there....and she has the kids back home and helping her (her excuse to keep it anyway)

I live in Mililani and I have a very healthy mother who could be an active senior.  She speaks English but her 1st language is Japanese. she is bored at home now that we no longer let her drive.  I'm getting to worry she is slowing diminishing mentally.  She's always complaining she can't do anything because she no longer drives.  I want her to make new friends in Mililani.  I want to get her mind busy.  I'm going to try the senior citizen club for her.

Hi Lee Ann: My mom is Japanese and 80 years old...she has stayed active with golf and still works 4 days a week!  That is the one thing that has kept my mom going...the will to remain active. She still drives too! Good luck with your mom!
