Are You Living in the Sandwich Generation?

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty ~ 512.750.6899

Sociologists call people who are being pushed and pulled in all directions, when it comes to space in your home, "The Sandwich Generation.”

You may laugh but think about all the living scenarios going on right now! There are many in their 50’s and 60’s who are sandwiched between aging parents, adult children and grandchildren.

Maybe you fall into the 30 - 40 year group and are experiencing living with young children, aging parents and maybe even grandparents.

Then there are those involved in elder care, special needs, or sibling care.

The common denominator is their homes have more people than space. Some have been waiting to time the market to make a move. Experience tells us the best time to buy or sell is when your needs change and accommodating those needs requires finding the right house that works for you.

I can help you or your friends and family sell their homes and/or find the home that gives you the space you deserve and need!  I’d like to help you weigh your options. I have years of experience and you have nothing to lose from knowing the possibilities.

Dorie, this is a new one on me, never heard of it before... now with that said... I am not pulled in any directions, I make my own decisions after Diane and I discuss the directions, so we are on the same page...

It really is about timing, Dorie. Back when I was young, my great grandfather's house held my divorced grandfather, an aunt that never married and uncle jessie, who had special needs and then we (7 of us) came to live with him, as well, for a bit!

His house was big enough to accommodate everyone, it seems that family members back then were closer, helped one another more and multigenerational housing was accepted as a way of life. Some people are getting back to it!

It is, Dorie.  My father-in-law was just put into hospice yesterday and after 10 years of caring for my parents, we had told my husband's siblings we cannot continue to be the sole caretakers for elderly parents.  However, his sister who is in charge per the in-laws' wishes basically washed her hands of stepping up and it is left to us to take care of them as well.  I am exhausted and tired of putting our lives on hold.  I feel like the Little Red Hen.

Hi Kathy Streib : There are so many opportunities available to figure out living arrangements. Money often dictates the route families take in making a decision.

Dorie:

What a clever way to introduce and discuss a topic that impacts lots of people, and with a great solution...to call you for a discussion of the options that are available.

Enjoy your weekend!

Good evening Jeff Dowler, CRS : Thank you for stopping by. It is a topic we have to be aware of..many families are pushed and pulled and sometimes just sitting down rationally we can pin point the right direction a family needs to go.

Dear Dorie,

Living in multi-generational households seems to be more common again. Not really a bad thing. Everyone gets some love and a break, when needed. The only challenge is finding housing with semi-separate quarters that has a bath and accommodates a big bed & some furniture. An extra family room or kitchenette can be a bonus, so the early risers do not have to bug the late sleepers.

Hi Dorie, I'd not heard of the sandwich generation before. When I was a kid I remember my grandmother retiring and selling her house. She then took turns living with different daughters and her sister for a short time. It seemed like a fun idea. She'd visit one for several weeks then go visit another for several weeks. It seems like a fun idea until she got sick. She lived with us the most. When she was at her worst, she lived with another aunt. So, her daughters did take turns taking care of her. I hope to be in a situation to not burden my kids too much. I guess only time will tell.

We certainly understand the sandwich generation.  On of our son's moved in for a few months, then moved out.  A few weeks later, our other son moved in...with his girlfriend!  Shortly, we are moving to Goodyear to be close to my dad and step mom, who could use a little support, then there is my mom...It really is the way family should be.  It is not easy, but it is fulfilling and we are lucky to be in a position to help.  All this talk about sandwiches have made me hungry, though.  😃

Hi Dorie! I am definitely in that 50's to 60's sandwich generation and have found myself working with family to resolve specific needs that I never imagined I would be involved in. It helps tremendously if families work together - that truly makes a world of difference.
