You Will Never See a U-Haul behind a Hearse

By
Real Estate Agent with HomeSmart

The title of this post comes from Denzel Washington. Or at least that is where I heard it from him speaking.

The words stood out so much that I just could not resist writing something using those words as a title to get people's attention.

One area where those words can apply is when I was in my third or fourth year of real estate. And the many agents I met, most of them selling very little, like maybe three homes a year, were obsessed to set the world on fire, putting in so many hours, but they just did not seek training, and practicing to where they could compete and acquire more business.

When I was teaching renewal credit hour classes it was so comical to see people rushing to get into a three-hour course because they had put off renewing their license to the last day or two. For over 40 years I have always had almost twice as many hours as I needed and had them a year in advance to when they were due.

Not only did I publish two books about real estate sales around 2000, but I also attended seminars regularly.  I also learned after just a few years, I was not going to become a millionaire, I could do well for my family, and we could live a happy life without me working 60+ hours a week at real estate.

I saw agents who worked all the time ending up in a divorce, many of them.

I hope your day is as good as mine.

Good morning Dan Dee,

A thoughtful post and one stemming from an interesting title. Working smarter not harder is always the key no matter what profession.

Hi Dan - love the phrase!  So many spend their lives gathering things and forgetting about what  at the end of the day is truly important.

Good morning Dan -  I guess I could add to this that you can work hard or you can work smart.  What have you gained if you lost in other areas of your life?

Excellent post that I read several times. I think what I like most about this post is that it is based on wisdom, and  the ideas would greatly help a real estate agent become successful if they listen and pay attention.

I'm with you Dan.  I don't sell 100 houses a year because I like my blood pressure the same. I still have a great life, travelling to see my 3 daughters in 3 other states!  Great title!  Working ON your business is so important.
