I paid $4.25 for a gallon of gas today.  That is a new record for me.  Just the cheap stuff, too.  So I was wondering,...

Are you making any changes because of the high gas prices?

I know I am.

Specifically, we will be driving my sister-in-law's Honda Accord to vacation in Northern Michigan this week.

Nicole's Grandpa Frank owns a beautiful home on Bear Lake.  It is about an hour from Traverse City just outside of Kalkaska.  The trip is about 350 miles, and my Jeep Liberty likes to gulp gas.  The Honda drives like a go cart in comparison.  It has a stick.  It will get almost double the miles per gallon.

We should save about $100 for the weekend.

So is anyone else doing anything specific to cut back??

Just curious.

I am lucky. I live in SC and ours isn't quiet that high yet. I try to keep the air pressure in my tires checked so I get better gas mileage and I also don't make unnecessary trips. I try to plan my shopping around other things that I have to do.

Hi Nathan and Teresa.  I hate to be cheap and I am not a super enviromentalist, but you have to tighten your belt buckle.

Have fun, Ken. That is a beautiful area of Michigan, we are heading to our cabin too. I need a break. I just turned in my SUV for a compact too.

It should do somewhat better, and I'm not showing homes that much anymore.

Everyone we know is cutting back on fuel by consolidating trips and errands if nothing else.

Hi Missy, Bob, and Carolin.  Thanks for stopping by.

Enjoy your trip.  I just combine as many errands into each trip that I can.

Hi Ken,

I don't go into NYC as much as I did.  I drive slower and coast more :).  It's $4.50 gallon here.

All the best!

Ken,

I just have less of a life than I did before!!! :-))  I am working more from home than I have in the past although there are more distractions here at home.  I guess it is a sign of the times.

I have narrowed my playing field. I route my trips based on areas. I have saved a bunch already.

Hi Ken,

I feel like we are at bargin prices here in Florida, I paid $3.97 yesterday for the cheap stuff. We are thinking first and driving less here as well. Even so my fuel bills are over $100/wk. May be time for an electric cart, seats four. Have been thinking along those lines for a while.

Enjoy the holiday weekend vacation.

Hi Ken,

they got me for 4.15 yesterday. I have found myself tring to work more from home, and also drive slower, and coast when I can.

So far i see that i have found myself wanting to go to my place in Northern WI, and not to mention how it's going to feel when I have to fill my boat that takes premium gas. I guess i'll just be grilling out and cutting back trips to the bars and restaurants while I'm up there to even things out a bit.

Have a great time. I'm can't wait to take a break in a couple weeks myself. A 5 day geat away should do it.

Hypermiling is kind of fun. It's these guys that get 60-80 miles to the gallon. It's a little game you play.

Try to never stop the car from moving, coast up to stoplights when they are red and try to anticipate them being green so you don't have to stop. Always try to keep moving (When you can.)

Always pull into a parking spot so you can pull right out without have to back up. If you have to idle more than 10-20 seconds turn your car off.

Coast down hills.

I have tried it in a Chevy Trailblazer. It definitely works. You can see the MPG go up. Now in my case they went from not so good, to a little better than not so good, but anything helps I guess.

I love my Prius.

07/02/2008 08:23 PM by boring rich

I had a really nice and fun to drive Audi S4 for over 3 years, however, for the whole last year I was assigned to a client up on the North in Buffalo Grove, so driving was literally 100 Mi/day and that car was a guzzler, I found myself pumping PREMIUM every other day and looking at my wallet deflate.

I finally left my feelings a side and got rid of the car for a much more gas friendly Chevy Aveo, and I could not be happier, sometimes I found myself almost running out of gas because I just don't remember to put any, it literally went from $40 every other day to $40 a week, not a bad deal. I guess you just have to re-organize priorities, between thrill and fun vs. concious and realistic.

How are you doing Ken?

07/07/2008 04:31 PM by Yvan

Hi Yvan, Rich, Greg, Carl, Andrew, Hal, Don, and Shaun.  Thanks for stopping by.

Back from Michigan.  It was a Honda Civic.  The gas tank holds only about 9 gallons!  Still a cheap fill up and we made it 350 miles on one tank.

Yvan, things are good.  Still getting my feet wet at the new office.  More basic stuff to figure out.
