Ray Henson and Margaret Rome are the hosts of our ActiveRain contests/challenges this month. The first part of their challenge was for us to answer 21 Truth or Dare questions. The second part of their contest/challenge is for us to tell our best "fish story" and it does not need to be about fish, it can be about anything. The "fish story" should be truthful, but like most "fish stories" it can be a little bit better than what actually happened. For my "fish story" I have chosen a true "fish story" that is actually about fishing, and nothing exaggerated about it.
When I was in high school I worked at a factory that made plastic tubing from the size of a garden hose down to as small as plastic tubing use for artificial vanes. Several of the men that worked with loved to go deep sea fishing, so we would do 3-4 deep sea fishing trips during the Summer. On these deep sea fishing trips we mainly fished for cod fish. For those of you who have never fished for cod fish, cod fish is not considered a sporting fish, but they would provide one heck of a fight. Cod fish are a bottom fish, and are found in deep water. So when you hook one they will fight to stay on the bottom of the ocean. As a result they fight you every inch of the way up.
I participated on several of these deep sea fishing trips, and never got sea sick except for one time. The sea was not ruff or choppy, but there were huge rolling waves, and that did not agree with me at all. To top it off the cod fish were biting the best that I had ever seen before, so laying down and relaxing was not really an option, and I was getting more and more sea sick with every fish I caught.
As we were about to call it quits for the day, I hooked what I thought was the bottom of the ocean. But soon I realized my hook was not caught on the bottom of the ocean, instead I had hooked the biggest cod fish I had ever caught, it was a 14 pounder. 14 pounds my not seem like much, but when it comes to cod fish it feels, as I said before, like I had hooded the bottom of the ocean.
I started reeling for all I was worth, and my stomach was bobbing up and down more than the huge rolling ocean waves. Just as the fish was reaching the top, I up chucked all over it, and kept on up chucking all over it until I the the fish into the boat. I don't know if fish get angry, but if this cod fish was not happy with getting caught, it was even less happy with what it was being covered with ...... LOL.
If you are thinking this was also not a very pleasant experience for the others who were fishing with me and watching all this, just think how they would have felt if they were fishing with Moses and dealing with his antics!!!
