My Fish Story

Ray Henson and Margaret Rome are the hosts of our ActiveRain contests/challenges this month.  The first part of their challenge was for us to answer  21 Truth or Dare questions.  The second part of their contest/challenge is for us to tell our best "fish story" and it does not need to be about fish, it can be about anything.  The "fish story" should be truthful, but like most "fish stories" it can be a little bit better than what actually happened.  For my "fish story" I have chosen a true "fish story" that is actually about fishing, and nothing exaggerated about it.

When I was in high school I worked at a factory that made plastic tubing from the size of a garden hose down to as small as plastic tubing use for artificial vanes.  Several of the men that worked with loved to go deep sea fishing, so we would do 3-4 deep sea fishing trips during the Summer.   On these deep sea fishing trips we mainly fished for cod fish.  For those of you who have never fished for cod fish, cod fish is not considered a sporting fish, but they would provide one heck of a fight.  Cod fish are a bottom fish, and are found in deep water.  So when you hook one they will fight to stay on the bottom of the ocean.  As a result they fight you every inch of the way up.

I participated on several of these deep sea fishing trips, and never got sea sick except for one time.  The sea was not ruff or choppy, but there were huge rolling waves, and that did not agree with me at all.  To top it off the cod fish were biting the best that I had ever seen before, so laying down and relaxing was not really an option, and I was getting more and more sea sick with every fish I caught.

As we were about to call it quits for the day, I hooked what I thought was the bottom of the ocean.  But soon I realized my hook was not caught on the bottom of the ocean, instead I had hooked the biggest cod fish I had ever caught, it was a 14 pounder.  14 pounds my not seem like much, but when it comes to cod fish it feels, as I said before, like I had hooded the bottom of the ocean.

I started reeling for all I was worth, and my stomach was bobbing up and down more than the huge rolling ocean waves.  Just as the fish was reaching the top, I up chucked all over it, and kept on up chucking all over it until I the the fish  into the boat.  I don't know if fish get angry, but if this cod fish was not happy with getting caught, it was even less happy with what it was being covered with ...... LOL.

If you are thinking this was also not a very pleasant experience for the others who were fishing with me and watching all this, just think how they would have felt if they were fishing with Moses and dealing with his antics!!!

Good evening George Souto ,

OMG..I have such a visual!! Thanks for your fish story and I have to agree with you I'm sure the cod fish was not happy getting caught and even more unhappy with what greeted him when he was getting landed in your boat! LOL!!

Good morning, George. As Dorie Dillard Austin TX said, what a visual! I always knew there was a reason I don't go out on boats and fish! :)

Oh George Souto - This is a story for Reader's Digest or some Sports Magazine! I loved everything about the story and learned from it too! I had no idea what a challenge it is to catch cod, or that the best place to fish for it is by Deep Sea Fishing! I can understand why you will never forget this story and I don't think I will either.

Thank you for writing this great story. I enjoyed it very much.

Hi George- the only time I got really seasick, the seas were as you described...slow rolling. What an awful feeling you must have had!  And I don't envy your mates because it's like a yawn...when you see a person yawn...well you know what happens.

That's a heckuva fish story, George.  The very first deep sea fish I caught was a Ling Cod.  I was a skinny 11 year old kid.  All, I could do on that boat was pull that pole to my chest, and yell, "Help."  It was a big one, and gave quite the fight.

Wonderful fish story George Souto .  I was not going to do part two but now I just remembered a fishing trip out of Sheepshead Bay.

I have caught a few cod and that must have been one heck of a fight and way to persevere!  I love your Moses cartoon!

Thank you for your two entries.  They were fun to read.

Wow, George, that's a great fish story. It wasn't funny at the time, but I suppose you can laugh about it now.  I had no idea Codfish were such fighters.
