A Look Back At What Life Could Have Been

In 1992, Independent candidate, H. Ross Perot, self-made Texas billionaire ran for President of the United States of America against the acting President of the United States, George H.W. Bush, and Governor Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton was elected and did become our 42nd President of the United States of America. If you are interested in hearing the debate in its entirety, you can find it by clicking on the link above or Googling "Bush, Clinton, Perot: The first 1992 presidential debate."

If you don't have time, or can't spare two minutes for each candidates response, you may be interested in knowing major issues don't change but people change. The moderator's opening question was directed to Ross Perot, who did not win. But even though I watched the debate in 1992, it wasn't as impactful to me back then, as I heard it again on 8/30/2022. The first question asked by Jim Lehrer, Moderator for the debate for each candidate was the same: "What separates each of you from each other? What do you believe tonight is the single most important separating issue of this campaign?

ROSS PEROT (U.S. NAVY, HEAVILY INVOLVED IN VIETNAM/POW/MIA)

"Five and a half million people came together on their own and put me on the ballot. I was not put on the ballot by either of the two of the parties, I was not put on the ballot by any PACS money, by any foreign lobbyists money, by any special interest money. This is a movement that came from the people. This is the way the Framers of the Constitution intended our government to be, a government that comes from the people. Over time, we have developed a government that comes at the people. That comes from the top down. Where the people are more or less treated as objects to be programmed during the campaign with commercials, and media events, and fear messages and personal attacks and things of that nature."

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION YOU MAY NOT KNOW

Before campaigning for President of the United States of America, a book was published in 1984 by Ken Follett about the heroic acts of H. Ross Perot, an American patriot, whose own team, "The Eagles," 'volunteered as groups from the executive ranks of the American Corporations, hand-picked and trained by a Green Beret Officer,' a mission, unlike anything anyone ever saw before with courage and self-servant leadership on their own to save lives.

"There MISSION: To penetrate a heavily guarded prison fortress in Iran and free the Americans imprisoned there."

If you haven't read the book, or know the story, and are interested in pulling together a TEAM to get an important job done, then I recommend finding the book and reading it.

QUOTES BY H. ROSS PEROT, SR.

Eagles don't flock, you have to find them one at a time.

The budget should be balanced, the treasury should be refilled,
the public debt should be reduced and the arrogance of pubic
officials should be controlled -- Cicero (referenced by Perot)

Another great American and in his footsteps 45 followed.  He like 45 was a disrupter and I do remember some negative ads about him. At that time the press was not filled with as much "fake news" as today.

Hi Patricia,
I was just thinking about the "What If" scenario this morning. It wasn't on this particular subject, but I do love (and agree with) Perot's quote about life being a cobweb.  Thanks for sharing.

Hello Patricia - I do remember the United States election of 1992 and Ross Perot (along with his running mate Admiral Stockwell).  I am reading a book about Abraham Lincoln, his campaigns and his presidency (taking a break as I am a little more than halfway through --- some issues (obviously in different forms) continue to exist.  History and our ability to remember remain interesting as well.

Leanne Smith - Today, older debates are more easily accessible. I find it interesting to listen to the issues and how the candidates answered but more importantly, what transpired during the elected President's term in office after they were elected and how history was recorded. Also, today, I am more cognizant of PAC and special interest groups and how they all meld together. I also remember the ads and mockery about Perot and chickens; yet he lived and died leaving a lasting legacy. I appreciate your comment very much.

Will Hamm - At the time he campaigned, I did not live in Texas and it wasn't until I moved here that I discovered he really was a mover and a shaker with a strong mind for strategic moves with the power and focus to succeed. Also, there was a time in Corporate America when I was considering changing jobs and did get an interview with Ross Perot's Company EDS. The building complex in Plano, TX was unlike anything I had ever seen in my lifetime. The style of interviewing was completely different from recruiting methods I knew. I recall having a very positive interview until there came a point when I hesitated and wasn't sure how to answer and that was when the interview ended. I often wondered how far I could have gone, if I had been hired. Today, I wonder where our country would be today if that man had become President.

Carol Williams - from paperboy to Distinguished Eagle Scout, I feel confident he was born into a family that instilled doing the right thing for other people. I also find rewinding the What If wheels in my head, that I begin to think differently. I would love to know what you were thinking.

Hi Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP
My "What If" was taking me back to my early childhood when my parents were still alive. I have often wondered what my life would have been like had they lived. There is no way of knowing of course, so I just go with the theory that my life was led in the direction it was supposed to.

I believe God puts silver linings in ALL dark clouds. We just have to be patient enough for those silver linings to reveal themselves. The death of my parents created many challenges for me. However, I have been able to look back on my life and see the path that it sent me on and the many blessings as a result. We do not know God's plan, but I choose to believe he has one.  Honestly, I don't know how people without faith get through this crazy life.

Hi Patricia... Ross Perot was quite the man and quite the character. I was always very taken by him. And his quotes are spot on... they were decades ago and they still are today.

Michael Jacobs - Both Abraham Lincoln and Ross Perot make great case studies. I always thought President Abraham Lincoln gave hope to those who weren't privileged to get a degree out of high school with motivation to succeed if you believed in yourself. As for Perot, he wasn't polished like a movie star out of Hollywood but very unique and a self-made billionaire through hard, honest work. I respect both of them. History satisfies my hunger for curiosity.

Nina Hollander, Broker - there was something very original about Ross Perot and he had a different type of charisma than a Clinton or a Kennedy. Could Perot have succeeded if he looked like James Dean? Watching the debate again today I paid more attention to what he said than his southern drawl and looks that I was unaccustomed to from not being a native Texas and discovered just how right he was on many things that did come to fruition. I really think he was a visionary and knew how to shape the country if given an opportunity. I guess, we will never know.

Hi Patricia... visionary is the perfect way to describe Ross Perot. We won't see the likes of him again any time soon.

Nina Hollander, Broker - My only hope is that he groomed enough people who worked for his company EDS in Plano. The closest to Perot was when I interviewed at his Company, EDS . It was very interesting. Perot reminded me a lot of Zig Ziglar. Both had unfailing good spirits and intelligence!

Patricia, I still remember his many, many charts.  Washington would have been very different with Perot as president.   Also Clinton most likely would NOT have won if Perot had not been the third candidate.

George Souto - By gosh, I never thought of that, that 'Clinton most likely would NOT have won...' I do believe you're right!!! I don't recall seeing his charts but that was the year I graduated and got my Bachelor's Degree and my daughter graduated HS. I just viewed "Ross Perot 1992 - Balancing the Budget & Reforming Government." Holy cow! He had the ability to explain the economy/housing/mortgage & interest in ways I was never taught before. He was brilliant!!!

George Souto - the charts he showed pointing out with his voodoo economics pointer to keep our eye on Japan, Asia, and Germany back in 1992 was so true it's scary and it's all coming back to bite us now.

Kat Palmiotti - When Perot was in the spotlight in the debates, I was at a different point in my life. Although I remembered him, I didn't actually grasp his concepts or the points he made as fully, as I do now. Watching the whole debate from a more mature perspective was very eye opening. Today, I recognize his beautiful mind, intelligence, and his vision for what he wanted to accomplish. George Souto made an excellent point about being a third candidate.

Jeff Dowler, CRS - I honestly didn't understand fully his drive and forte. After watching the debate fully and really listening and paying attention, I acknowledge he was brilliant and our country could have benefited by his intelligence long term. I get the feeling he was a true strategic partner/planner and very successful because of his intelligence and ability to put together a Team that could excel and succeed.
