Last night, I joined about a dozen guys from my church in a luxury skybox at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock to enjoy a home game for the Round Rock Express.

We had special VIP parking, which was both close to the door and FREE.  The air conditioned suite was awesome, with a full kitchen, leather sofa and chair, and a few bar stools overlooking the field from the first base side.

I must admit that this was a terrific way to enjoy the game.  Although we had the comfort of A/C inside, I felt like I was more a part of the action by sitting in the outside seats that were exclusive to our suite (there are 12 per box).

The Express is co-owned by Nolan Ryan, and they are the minor league team for the Houston Astros.  They were founded in 2000 in this area.

This was my second visit to the ballpark, and since tickets are really quite reasonable, I probably need to return again soon with my son and daughter.  Typical prices for tickets are only $6 (for berm seating) to $12 (for box seating), with a $1 discount for kids under 12 and seniors.

As another bonus, Monday night is "Dollar Hot Dog Night", so I grabbed three of those before the game.  We managed to convince one friend of ours to eat NINE hot dogs, which doesn't sound like an incredible feat unless you realize that he was running late because he had already eaten dinner previous to the game.

They had a number of fun contests running (trivia, bingo, various races) and they launched t-shirts into the crowd a few times.  Overall, the atmosphere is casual and very enjoyable and family-friendly, with one minor exception.

There was a guy sitting about two boxes down from us who was SUPER LOUD and very insistent on trash-talking every batter for the opposing team.  We joked about not wanting him for a neighbor at home.

Despite this, I would highly recommend checking out the Dell Diamond if you are here for a visit or if you are looking for a fun activity for the family.  There is also an adjacent "Fun Zone" for kids with a playground, rock wall, sport court, pool and picnic area, as well as a Texadelphia restaurant on-site.

Thanks for reading about my evening.  Here is the official website for the Express if you would like to purchase tickets: http://www.roundrockexpress.com/

My parents lived in Georgetown - near Hutto, back in 1999 - I remember visiting there, Round Rock is a great place to be.  Now I'm thinking about Saltgrass Steakhouse and the Shiner Bock Beer Bread - thanks for the great post!  I know things have changed tenfold since I was last there, but hopefully there are still bluebells and bats!

Jason, good for you. we don't have much minor league action in NY. the last Yankee game I went to, the tickets were over $200 each. luckily we didn't have to pay for them. They were the pepsi seats, 3 rows behind the visitors dugout which happened to be the Red Sox.

The free tickets weren't much of a help though because the beers were $8 each. I was with 3 friends and not my children so we had to have a few :-)

Glad you are off to a great season.  It sounds like you had a great time and I think this is still a great way to relax and socialize.

We have the Frisco RoughRiders here. Much better place to take the kids than that other big league park we have here....

Minor league baseball is a great value, and you never know when you'll be watching a future big-leaguer. It's always fun to speculate about who will get called up at the end of the year. The Las Vegas 51s ballpark, Cashman Field, has indoor seating behind the plate and that's a nice break when our temps hit triple digits.

Sounds like fun....not a fan of baseball, but who can say no to dollar hot dog night:)

I see you have a gold star here. Are they now showing the Localism features on AR as well? I've had 10 posts featured on AR, and about 5 featured on Localism. The Localism features don't show up in my AR stats.

And if I could watch a game from a comfy couch and private room, then I'd go too... that's the only way I'd go =P

Jason, we have a class A team in Lynchburg, The Hillcats. Going to a game is one of our favorite things to do and they have the same promotions, games, etc. We are so blessed to have this in our town!

JASON - As you know, I really enjoy going to the Long Island Ducks games for the same reasons that you like the Round Rock Express.  As much as I enjoy going to a major league game, it is very expensive, and time-consuming with all of the traffic.  Glad that you had a good night.  How's the 9 hot dog guy feeling today?
