Has Wallpaper Lost its Popularity?

Wallpaper 004

Wallpaper has been used as early as 200 B.C. by the ancient Chinese, who glued rice paper to their walls.

Wallpaper 008

It is usually sold in rolls and is applied onto a wall using wallpaper paste. Wallpapers can come plain as "lining paper", textured, with a regular repeating pattern design, or, much less common today, with a single non-repeating large design carried over a set of sheets.

Removal of the existing wallpaper can be a simple procedure or a day or two of scraping and scraping and scraping.  Depending upon how the wallpaper was originally put on the wall can make all the difference

According to doityourself.com\ ... "Wallpaper attracts grime and stains, and they are not easy to clean."

These days, wallpaper has mostly lost its popularity. Now a topic of contention among homeowners, it seems to be more of a negative than a positive for many, but it all comes down to personal taste.

"Do you like wallpaper or would you rather avoid it at all costs?"

Unlike the days of old ... wallpaper was wall-to-wall, filling an entire room.

In some ways, I believe wallpaper is making a comeback. However, from my perspective, in a different fashion.

Accent Wallpaper to enhance the Room's appearance

Today, I am seeing it as an accent wall (see above photo) and even for putting some flair in a bookcase "backsplash" – or even on just the ceiling.

Now that is an interesting concept. It definitely is a "personal" thing and so it could be a fun and exciting adventure to try different ideas.  But borders and wall-to-wall? Not seeing that anywhere around here anymore without calling it "outdated".

Diana, I have never been a fan of Wallpaper. My first home was covered with it and it was a two story Colonial in Waterbury, CT. it took me months to scrape it down... ironically some rooms had three or four layers of wallpaper:)Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. oh yes! Those were the days when it was so In Style!  I remember a house I had and during a 2 week period my husband and dad painstakingly worked at removing all the wallpaper (at my request of course).  My dad said to my husband "Mother and I just can't understand why Diana would want to remove all this beautiful wallpaper?"  I overheard this conversation and later reminded my husband that the reason there are hundreds of different types of WP is because everyone has different decor taste. Mine was not those tiny little flowers -- maybe for old people but not me!  (Note: this conversation happened 20 yrs ago.  Now I am old!  ha ha)

Oh God, I hope so!!  I once had a listing appointment in a home and the seller was telling me about the designer wallpaper they had in the home (it was flocked).  I was training a new agent at the time and while touring the home she leaned in and whispered, do we have to take every listing opportunity?  I suppressed a laugh and used it as a learning opportunity.

June Piper-Brandon That made me chuckle!  Oh yes!  I remember a few homes I have toured and thought ... "Oh if only these walls could talk!"  The fuzzy paper was the worst! LOL

Diana Dahlberg - Good morning!

I'm finding homeowners are becoming more creative and many are using creativity to dress up a small space or install wallpaper where there are cracks and uneven walls. I have even seen textured white and/or ivory wallpaper in half baths and painted over in a color of their choice. It can be very interesting!

Hi Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP ... the creativity of some is remarkable!  But less is always better in my book.

Good morning Diana. I have had homes over the years that contained a lot of wallpaper. Now, no longer a fan but can see that in some situations it still has application. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I had wallpaper on a number of walls in homes I've lived and even in my office.  Today? You will not find a stitch of wallpaper in my house. However, I have seen some interesting applications that actually enhanced the room beautifully and tastefully.

I'm not a fan of wallpaper but could see some possible applications such as the shelving above. I laughed at the green photo - ick!

Green has NEVER been my color! That picture gave me shivers up my spine!  There are only a few applications that seem workable today and it is not wall to wall!

Hello Diana - it seems any subject can be divisive.  And when wallpaper becomes the topic, well I guess it can be summarized as a conflict conundrum.  Which might be a good name for a wall covering pattern.

Michael Jacobs Well I have to say it definitely is a puzzle.

I have never been a fan of wallpaper since most of it doesn't look good but when done properly it actually looks very good.

Diana - I think that I have lost my interest in wallpaper.  Too bad for the companies like Schumacher.

Good morning Diana,

I'm not a fan of wall paper. I grew up with it and love the clean, uncluttered lines now with it gone! I can't imagine sleeping in the bedroom pictured with wall to wall green..not sure I could get to sleep!

I have to agree!  That green would have made it so I would not have been able to sleep!

Taste is such an individual thing, Diana. Though I am not a fan of wallpaper because it is a trendy accent that goes in and out. I have noticed lately that it can make a bold statement,  leaving people impressed but it must be done impeccably, otherwise it is a big fail!

Diana, wallpaper has never been my favorite, even if it is subtle.   Neither has bold vibrant colors for walls, although sometimes an accent wall isn't bad.

Joan Cox Thanks for your comments.  I feel the same way.  I guess I am more of a earth-tone kind of gal.  If there is color it is more pale than vivid!  I guess that's why there are so MANY choices!  We are all different! And thank the Good Lord for that!
