How crazy is that?

By

I have been in the business since 2004, but my ex-wife had been in a few years before that and I had tagged along on some showings to show support or if she wanted company if she didn't feel right about meeting someone.

I remember one of the first showings she had the door was off a deck, with slatted wood, not butted against each other. Well, you know what happened, she dropped the key and of course it went right through the slat and landed below the deck. I think we managed to get it out, but that was my first chance to see that things can be pretty crazy.

Yes, I have seen the naked bodies at showings when the house was supposed to be vacant, but a teenage son had decided to come home to entertain his girlfriend. But, the craziest thing that happened to me was as follows.

Once in the business, I was showing a home in a gated community. All keys had to be left at the security gate, not on the home for sale. Well, I checked in, and was handed the key. Off we went to the unit and as hard as I tried, the key would not work. I went back to the gate and asked the security guard if he had given me the right key.

"Let me check," he says, but giving me that look that he thought I was just some stupid Realtor who did not know how to operate a lock. Well, it turned out he had given me the wrong key. Assuring me this was the correct key, I returned to the unit. I placed the key in the lock, and turned, well the end of the key turned, but not the lock. I now had a key in two pieces, one in the lock and one in my hand, no open door and a client who was getting frustrated. I called the agent who had the listing and told him what had happened.

I will not repeat what they said. My client decided to leave as he was no longer interested in the property and had another appointment elsewhere. The listing agent called a locksmith who got the key out, only to pronounce that the key was the wrong key for the unit.

I could not believe that the guard had given me not one wrong key, but two.  Not only do we have to do our jobs, but often we end up doing others jobs for them as well, whilst making sure we have the right implements.

Since then I make sure I have thin nosed pliers in my car, a hammer, and a screwdriver, just in case I might need them at a listing.

Wow what a hassle Nick - 2 wrong keys.  I can't recall that ever happening in 35 years in the biz.  I do recall keys not being in a lockbox....and how inconvenient for all involved that was. Always something, isn't it!

Good evening Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 ,

I think we all carry a little set of tools now in our cars after having a few situations like this one! Frustrating to say the least. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Nick- I'll bet many agents carry some tools in their car for those Just-in-case situations!  It's ridiculous that the person at the security gate couldn't get the keys right!!!   Thank you so much for participating in this month's challenge.

My very first showing, I couldn't get the door open and had to go back to the building guard who had indeed given me the wrong key. The second one was hard to open too. Geez.

So many crazy things happen in real estate but I don't think I have seen nudity as others have mentioned.  It seems that quite a few have walked in on teenagers that thought they were being sly, haha.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I am certain the guard gave you the look when you told him key number 1 does not work.  Despite Listing Agent calling a locksmith I believe the association should have reimbursed the homeowner for the expense of replacing the lock and loss of a potential buyer😎

Oh those keys that don't open doors, Nick. I remember having that issue once and went around the house checking for unlocked windows... found one and climbed into the house and let my clients in through the front door. They were gob-smacked!

That would have been a bad scene.  It would have made better sense to have a rail at the guard house and each agent attach their lock boxes to the rail

Yes. I have also had lots of experiences with keys, locks, wrong keys, etc. It is very embarrassing when the potential buyer is with you. They don't usually laugh, nor are they forgiving. Usually, they get another realtor. You're not alone.

Joan Cox those are wonderful to have.

George Souto we averted our eyes and left. It was the days before feedback requests, not sure what I would have left.

Bill Salvatore - East Valley thanks for stopping by, working on it.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker never happened since.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX clients are always surprised when I pull out different tools.

Kathy Streib I sure thought so, and I always think, what happens if I get pulled over by the police, what will they think about my set of tools.

Kat Palmiotti it is frustrating but also makes you look incompetent.

Brian England lucky you, it is never pretty.

Eileen Burns I do not know who paid, all I know is the listing agent gave me a hard time.

Nina Hollander, Broker I had a client pull the deck door shut as we stepped out, however it locked automatically. I had to jump off the deck and walk around to let the clients back into the house. So, yes, we also need to be acrobats and supple. I now always make sure i am the last onto the deck.

Ed Silva it was supposed to make everyone feel more secure and allow the HOA to know who was going in and out.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP from memory this client never bought with me, and I think this was the last showing we had.

Nick, you've got to love it when those things happen.  It's a good thing the client didn't get too frustrated.  I had a client call me once because their key got stuck in the door.  I realized, I had to start carrying around some WD-40 with me, along with some other tools.  Great story! Thanks for sharing!
