SOS From Charlotte's Animal Care & Control: Please Adopt A Dog Now!

By

CHARLOTTE'S CMPD ANIMAL CARE& CONTROL OVER CAPACITY WITH DOGS NEEDING ADOPTION

"True love is a hop, skip, and a dog shelter away!"

Charlotte/Mecklenburg's Animal Care & Control are way over capacity and need people to adopt dogs as soon as possible to avoid having to put any animals down. Adopt a dog and save a life!

CMPD Animal Care and Control have more than 28 dogs needing kennels.  Some kennels are already being shared by two or three dogs at the same time. The shelter also does not have enough staff and volunteers to properly care for so many dogs. CMPD is waiving adoption fees to promote finding these animals new home.

"Love at first sight still exists. For proof, head down to a dog rescue shelter."

CMPD Animal Care & Control officials put out an SOS earlier this week for adoptions and foster care when they had 40 dogs waiting for open kennels. As a result of their SOS,  as of Wednesday morning, CMPD Animal Care & Control had 188 dogs in the shelter and 92 in foster care. They have 28 dogs waiting for open kennels. Sadly, more dogs are arriving daily.

If you've been thinking about adding a dog to your family, please consider adopting from CMPD Animal Care & Control. The shelter is open daily from 11:00 AM till 7:00 PM Mondays through Fridays and from 11:00 AM till 5:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. You do not need to be a Mecklenburg County resident to adopt.

"My favorite dog breed is rescue."

Also please note that this Saturday, October 8th, Subaru South Blvd will be sponsoring a "For The Love of Pets Day" event at the Animal Care & Control shelter.

"Second-hand animals make first-class pets."

If you're unable to adopt a dog you might be able to foster or volunteer or make a donation to Charlotte's Animal Care & Control Shelter.

This SOS call for adopting a dog from the CMPD Animal Care & Control shelter is provided by Nina Hollander and Carolinas Realty Partners, Coldwell Banker, Greater Charlotte  area pet parents and pet-friendly residential real estate experts. Bob "RealMan" Timm I get that, Bob... and we also can't accommodate any more pets in our house... but we can help in other ways. And every little bit of financial support helps.

Bill Salvatore - East Valley hi Bill... I had three rescue Siamese cats back in the 1970's. All of our cats and dogs for the past 20+ years have been rescues.

Joan Cox hi Joan... I don't quite know what's going on... but the shelters are pushing capacity or over capacity all over North Carolina. It just breaks my heart.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX hi Dorie... I can relate to that... we have a cat and a dog and I can see how much the price of their food has increased in the past couple of years. Fortunately, I can afford it, but clearly in many homes hard (and heart-breaking) decisions need to be made. I just can't imagine surrendering one of my fur-babies.

It  is sad that they have so many dogs needing homes, hopefully people will step up and help out.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 hi Nick... when the shelter put out a call to action to the public on Tuesday they had 40+ dogs waiting for a kennel. Bu Wednesday morning the number was down to 28... so clearly people are listening.

So glad, it is upsetting thinking they may have to euthanize some if they cannot place them. Glad the call to action is helping.

Our current dog has been adopted or as some say "rescued" from a local animal shelter. From my experience these dogs are usually more intelligent than pure breed dogs. Necessary information to be shared and thanks for sharing.

Leanne Smith hi Leanne... I would agree with you that the dogs that are not pure breed are more intelligent... they are also in my experience much healthier. Our "rescue" cats and dogs have all been simply amazing and smart and affectionate.

Good morning Nina.  My dear Halley was from our Pend Oreille Shelter.  More than a year later I can get caught by surprise and get a bit misty eyed.  I was curious to see what would happen to the shelters when people started going back to work or were able to go and do things again.  Ours was down to about none available but I see it starting to grow in animals ready to adopt.  Not to your stage yet, and hopefully the cries for help will do just that.  Mark

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho hi Mark... lots of dogs and cats were adopted during the pandemic when people were home. Many were returned after people returned to their "normal" lives. I don't know how they did it. I could never give up my fur babies. Now, I think people might be surrendering dogs because they can't afford to feed them. However you slice it, it's very sad and heart-breaking.

Nina I am not a pet person, but the little guy in the upper left photo would be one I would consider if I were a pet person.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker, I see so many posts on FB from those who are trying to find owners for their pets. I just don't know why they adapt in the first place. My heart breaks for these fur babies.

Beth Atalay good morning, Beth... makes me crazy when I see people buy or adopt pets and then try to surrender them. Mine are like my children... I just can't imagine doing that. I suspect many people take on a pet without really understanding up front what a time commitment it really is.

Nina Hollander, Broker - overcrowded animal shelters are a problem here too. I know many people who continuously adopt and foster more than one pet. It seems to be a growing problem in America.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP hi Patricia... from what I hear almost all the NC shelters are pretty much at capacity right now. Really boggles the mind and it's so sad for all these lovely dogs.

What a wonderful message to share! I hope the SOS reaches lots of people who will step forward and bring a new fur friend, or more than one, to a new home.

Jeff Dowler, CRS hi Jeff... we are truly in crisis mode here in Charlotte when it comes to shelters being at over capacity. In all the years I've lived here I've never heard them call for help because dogs were in danger of being euthanized. I was very grateful that a number of my Facebook friends shared my post after seeing it.
