What Happened to Tom? Part 4

By
Education & Training with Number Cruncher LLC

How could Tom have avoided the mess he ended up in with the IRS?  Let's take a look.

1st - He could have paid the tax he owed with the original tax return.

2nd- He could have sent in his tax return without payment but immediately set up an installment agreement with the IRS.

3rd - He should have opened the first that he received from the IRS and either contacted the IRS himself or hired a tax resolution specialist to contact them for him.

4th - In addition to contacting the IRS Tom would need to stay in compliance with the IRS and the terms of whatever plan they agreed to.

Even though dealing with the IRS sparks fear in many people, it is not a good reason to ignore them.  If you are too scared to deal with the IRS yourself, hire a tax resolution specialist to step into your shoes and deal with the IRS for you.  If you or someone you know is dealing with IRS problems, contact me at 702-469-9426 or candy@numbercruncherllc.tax.

Problems do not go away if they are ignored; they usually snowball and get worse. Tom should have addressed it upfront!

I did enjoy your four part series and helped to outline the issues some folks like Tom have experienced.  Being an independent contractor for over 25 years as well as my husband for 10 years, we immediately hired an accountant to help keep us out of trouble with the IRS and so far so good.

I am happy you enjoyed the series Leanne Smith.  Good work hiring an accountant.  Independent contractors are among the highest to get picked for an audit!  You are already ahead of the game.

Have a great day!

Hi Candance,

Tom should have reached out to the IRS right away. Hiding from them is not the way to handle it. Great series!! Just like Leanne I've been an independent contractor, only for 31 years and hired an accountant the first year, to help keep me out of trouble with the IRS and so far so good!

Good morning Candace. The IRS has more resources than you do, so it pays to work with them since they never go away! Enjoy your day.

Lots of good learning from this series, Candy. No doubt there are others who have done what Tom did and got themselves into trouble with the IRS. Issues like this won't just go away.
