HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Do not live by fear alone. Get out and make people happy. This was the last pumpkin for sale in the grocery store yesterday afternoon.  I paused and let three simple words sink in.

Moving to the Produce Department I remembered the guy, the one with the Vietnam cap on his head. He parked his car across from mine. I noticed he had an unusual logo on his back window and I was dying to find out what it meant. He was busy and kept moving things around in his car, so I let him be. As soon as I noticed him in the store, I had to ask what his logo meant, after telling him I parked across from his car and explained that I was intrigued by his logo. I just had to know! He explained it was the MARINES The Few. The Proud logo. As Kat Palmiotti would not be surprised, I engaged in conversation and after 45 minutes, I was completely educated, informed because we exchanged war wounds and stories only we would understand. By the time we parted, I left with a wink from him and a handshake.

Moving right along I stopped at the fresh meat counter and asked for one breaded parmesan chicken breast. No, not too big, not too small, no not the one closest to him on the bottom of the pan, it was the one closest to me on the other side of the meat case, plump, loaded with cheese and just the right size. With patience, he found the right one. When it came time for him to grab the waxed paper, the box seemed to jump over to me and landed in my hands. He bust out laughing and said, "Good Catch!" Of course, we engaged in funny conversations.

White Milk. I couldn't believe there wasn't any white milk dated after October 31st. I did not buy milk but there was a lady passing out samples. She was older than me, or at least I would have loved to know for sure that she was older, and she persuaded me to come over to her little table. Nobody was around and we also began talking as if we knew each other since childhood. Oh my gosh, it was like talking to myself in the mirror! We were on the same page on so many chapters of our lives!

You can Fall in Love with the human race when you strike up a conversation and discover something in common. You begin to know people better and appreciate them better when there is mutual understanding. You can feel what they are feeling, see them for who they are, and know where they are coming from when you talk, they listen, they talk, you listen. As Barbara Streisand once sang, a long, long time ago:

PEOPLE (Lyricist Bob Merrill; Sung by Barbara Streisand)

People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world
We're children, needing other children
And yet letting a grown-up pride
Hide all the need inside

Happy Halloween. Make people happy. Just talk face-to-face because after all, people do need people, so much more than electronics or listening to the Media talk about things that sends shivers down your spine and you never know how much is truth and how much is fiction.

Good morning Patricia,

What a fun post! Happy Halloween to you too! Even a trip to the super market can be filled with human connections. One reason I prefer to shop for myself and not have pick-up..you miss out on so much!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - Rather than stress about what isn't available or how much more prices are from week to week, talking to people in the grocery store is a stress releaser. A funny thing happened when I also stopped at the Farmer's Market. I noticed that a woman was following me and picking up the same veggies and fruit. When I eye-balled here with a smile, she complimented me on picking out the healthy food. We started talking until we both ended up at the register. She was a lovely customer. I know the Cashier and she observed it all. When it was my turn, she bust out laughing. It was a good day!

Hi Patricia,
It sounds like you had an interesting and educational day. It's really pretty easy to engage with people if you just find one little thing to start a conversation. You obviously know how!

Have a spooktacular day!

Carol Williams - I prefer face-to-face talking than telephone talking. I need to see the face, eyes, and expressions. Otherwise, I don't feel there is a true connection. When two strangers begin to talk, it can be like a science experiment. Something magical occurs.

What fun shopping trip to the grocery store Patricia! Happy Halloween! You shared a lot of love to all the people around you and that my friend is what I'm grateful to have learned to do from my parents all those years ago.  It's about relationships and caring about others and that's it, isn't it!!  So much blooms from that point on!

Lise Howe - I frequently strike up a conversation with strangers. I think I got that from my mother. I have had wonderful conversations with strangers at the airport, in the grocery stores, church parking lot, standing in long lines at the post office, and other random places. I love to do that!

I always love your stories, Patricia.  I especially noticed that paragraph about getting the guy behind the meat counter to lasso the correct Parmesan Chicken Breast.  I've been in that boat.  Only, sometimes, it's at a Mexican grocery, where I need to speak in my limited Spanish to get what I want.

Myrl Jeffcoat - This story about being picky about getting the right Parmesan Chicken Breast from the Butcher was the one that made me laugh too. The other two conversations were really good, but this one gave both of us a hearty laugh when that wax paper box landed in my hands. It was so funny.

I was glad to hear you had similar stories at the "Mexican grocery." I'm sure we were both on store surveillance cameras and gave someone else a lot to laugh about too!
