Isn't freedom of speech a wonderful thing? It allows us to express the most moronic sentiments for the world to see. But there is another freedom we have as well - freedom to cancel our subscriptions to a newspaper that allowed this garbage to be printed. Freedom never to buy that newspaper again if we don't happen to have a subscription to it.

We also have the freedom to call in to speak to the editor and freedom to let the other local media know exactly what we think.

I am talking about Chris Satullo- a Philadelphia Inquirer Columnist - who had this to say about America's birthday:

"Put the fireworks in storage. Cancel the parade. Tuck the soaring speeches in a drawer for another time.

This year, America doesn't deserve to celebrate its birthday. This Fourth of July should be a day of quiet and atonement.

For we have sinned. We have failed to pay attention. We've settled for lame excuses. We've spit on the memory of those who did that brave, brave thing in Philadelphia 232 years ago."

Here is the source article.

It is people like Satullo who give comfort to our enemies; who demoralize our troops in harms' way and who in fact, disgrace the founders of this great nation.

Oh and one final thing - if you happen to be a REAL journalist working the Philadelphia market, then please do what I would do if I were there. I would be finding out EXACTLY what this moron is doing on Friday and the rest of the weekend. Is he sat in a Church praying for the soul of America? Or perhaps he is out with his friends and family celebrating along with the rest of us. Certainly the pictures of him doing just that - which I am certain he will be - would gain widespread coverage across the nation.

And to Satullo I have this to say - from a brand new citizen, you should be ashamed of yourself. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!

If we have no faith, were lost. Now more than ever we need to celebrate our country and independence! It's the removal of society fromt our original values that is causing the current state of our country. I for one am proud to be an american. Let's fix the lack of patriotism first!

Karl - I think fixing patriotism is the perfect place to start.

Anti-American?  I don't read it that way.  Simply one who feels our present course does not measure up to the one plotted by our forefathers.  Patriotism and nationalism should not spawn blind homerism.  It means accepting fault and guilt for the actions of a nation, a people, along with the praise and jubilant adoration.  It's how we make ourselves better.  Stronger.  So while I have no plans of canceling my July 4th observance and festivity, I respect this American's disappointment with some of the recent events that have transpired in the name of our great nation.  I happen to think that we need the galvanizing cleansing of a good party more than ever, but it's silly to bash a man for thinking differently.  Just waiting for the "Move to Canada!" crowd to show up and take up pitchforks now.  And please spare me the lecture about how even insinuating that this man is not the Devil incarnate will somehow affect the morale of our troops.  No one admires a soldier more than I.

So Paul - just so we are clear, you don't believe America deserves to celebrate her birthday?

Obviously we are not clear, Simon. I clearly stated that I will be participating in our nation's celebration. I would not do so if I felt her undeserving. That does not mean I find one who believes otherwise to be an anti-American moron. I take issue with your frequent attempts to villainize anyone who does not share your views.

Paul - clearly you need to spend some more time on my blog, because that is certainly not what I do. There is a difference between thinking America needs a different direction and the anti-American drivel put forth - in Philadelphia of all places - by the likes of Chris Satullo. This - hmm - almost used the "M" word again - bashed America relentlessly.

Simon,

I definitely share your views when it comes to patriotism and love of country.

Congratulations this post is now featured in the Silent Majority Group of Active Rain.

I like to spit on his article right now. He is another liberal who sold America out and blames America for the world's problem. Shame on him.

Maybe so, Simon.  But the times I do visit, there always seems to be a bash session underway.  If I may opine, I'd suggest that from my preposterously removed vantage point, that you appear to be a well-intentioned man of principle who has simply been in radio too long.  I know that forum begs for conflict.  I wish you a happy fourth as a proud new citizen.

Oh, my dear Simon - how simple it is to accuse someone of being an "anti American Moron" these days. All it takes is for anyone to voice a concern, an opinion, if you will, that this country has gone largely against what the forefathers envisioned, and fought for. I read his article, all of it, and to be frank, nowhere did I see a lack of patriotism. Only a nostalgia of sorts for what we no longer have - balls to stand up tall in the face of fear and courage to fight for our Constitutional rights and those of others. I doubt I would dismiss his article as either being written by a moron or by an anti-American, in fact I would go so far as to say he strikes me as a hell of a lot more American than any of the blind followers of this administration. Waving the flag does not a patriot make - giving a shit does, and I am sure that rant in the Inquirer would not have happened if this particular American didn't give a shit. He would do what most people have been doing for years - being conveniently mum.

Simon - it continues to amaze me that Satullo, et al, will rail upon anything this administration has done as if it had never been done in the history of the U.S. They fail to condemn Lincoln for doing much the same. They fail to condemn Roosevelt for doing this on an even larger scale. They fail to condemn Kennedy for his actions and especially Johnson for the atrocities committed in Viet Nam.

Unless Mr. Satullo is a complete hypocrite, he should apologize for ever having celebrated the 4th of July and never celebrate it again.

Inna ~ You would defend this man as alot more American than those who truly love and honor America on the Forth Of July. Something is wrong with the liberal mind. How is this America. How is blaming America for all the problems in the world strikes you as American.

And you call us blind.

I heard Rush read this on his program the other day... He added that if Liberals got everything they wanted in this country, they would hate it even more - because everything they want, ie universal healthcare, higher taxes, treating terrorist like American citizens - has been tried around the world and failed.  Even Canada, Great Britton and Germany are trying to get out of their Healthcare mess.  Socialism and let's just be nice doesn't work, never has, never will.  it goes against the competive, creative human spirit.

Nicholas, did you actually read the article, or just the few lines that Simon posted?

Paul - you clearly never listened to my radio show. If you had, you would not be able to make the comment you just did.

Inna - you think this guy is a patriot? I think him an anti-American moron. Whichever one of us is right is not particularly relevant in relation to your comment. Who ever said I was giving this or any other Administration a pass? But as I have already said, there is a huge difference between not agreeing with the policies of a certain President and bashing America. This guy went the second route.

Mike - as always, you make incredibly valid points.

Nick - I would love some of the America bashers to spend three years right now living in a european country of their choosing. This isn't a "why don't you leave" comment, but a "talk from a position of knowledge" point.

Susan - I rarely listen to Rush so i did not hear him on this piece. the point he apparently made however, is right on the money. And speaking of someone who grew up and lived under socialism - you are 1000% correct - socialism does not work.

Simon , It seems to me that to criticize your country is one thing but to be ashamed of it is something else altogether.I criticize my daughter but I am never ashamed of her. There are just truly people in the world who do not no how to handle happiness.

Hugh - great analogy!!!

I read the whole article and I agree with you Simon. The guys a creep. I mean really, if he calls that TORTURE (what was done to those prisoners) then he'd never survive a real war.

It was more a prank, less than college hazing than it was torture.

Our forefathers would LAUGH hysterically at that being called torture.

Regardless, he's way off base. The 4th is a celebration of the lives that were lost to gain us independance and I will not thumb my nose at that sacrifice even if this man doesn't appreciate what was done for us or somehow thinks some rediculous pranks negate those sacrifices.

There are aspects of America that I am not proud of. Things going on that our forefathers would be shocked and ashamed of. It does not negate their sacrifice and anyone that says so is dillusional at best.

It figures though that he writes for the Inquirer.

Simon- The cool thing about being in this job is you can find out all kinds of stuff.  I am not stupid enough to post his home address but I can tell you he lives right across the street from a country club.

I guess that makes him a "country club liberal" no?

As a Marine I fought for his right to voice his opinion. As an American, I would like to remind him that the parties on the 4th are also to celebrate the fact that it happened. This country was created. The greatest country on Earth by a long shot. Nothing is even close. Since the beginning of the country there have been folks who are not happy with the way things are going. But, it always seems to work out for the best, and this most excellent of countries continues to this day.

As an ex-Marine who loves his country, and is probably at the "my country right or wrong" position on things, I would like to take him out back for a simple meeting of sorts.

Simon - where exactly in my comment did I accuse you of 'giving a pass'?

To make my rather simple point even less difficult to grasp - the man has a conscience - a pre-requisite for feeling guilt, shame, and adoration and love, if you will. His gripe is not so much with the administration, but with the fact that we, the people, allowed it to happen. That's all. How exactly is this un-American?

Simon, thanks for the post. WE the people are not our administration. Many of us have fought over the years to keep this country the land of the free.

John put it correctly. WE are not the administration. We are the people this country was created for.

How come libs are never happy? It must be rough.

Simon, when I read the article, I certainly must agree with Paul, I don't think this journalist is being anti-American at all.  I believe he is saying this country is going down a wrong path.  And I agree with this reporter, we do have a great country, BUT there are many things that happen, that are VERY wrong like greed, tolerance of improper actions on the part of some, etc. etc.  You have heads of major corporations ripping off the company, or customers, and they get multi-million dollar severance packages.  For doing what?  A great job at the helm?  That is what I believe this reporter was trying to point out, and that part I do agree with him.  Do we have a great country - YES.  Are some changes needed and overdue - YES!  IMO anyway!  Have a great remainder of the holiday!  BTW, kind of along these lines, I even wrote a blog today about changes in laws that are needed.  Kind-of funny that this blends in with my blog.
