With 200 Bocce Courts in The Villages, Florida it is quite the sport for many locals. First thing first what the heck is bocce? In bocce, the goal of each player is to roll his/her bocce balls closer to the pallina — the target ball — than the other players. The player scores a point for each ball that is closer to the pallina than its opponent’s balls on the court, which is enclosed by walls.
Bocce dates back to the Roman Empire and is one of the oldest yard games. The modern version was started in Italy and some call it Italian Lawn Bowling. Bocce dates back to 5200 BC and reached Greece in 600 BC.
Back to The Villages, there are leagues, bocce clubs and many neighborhoods will start their own league and book the courts. My Villages which is about 100 homes has eight teams four per team. They compete once a week for about eight weeks and play for the glory. Me I’m not a bocce player, but support those that do!
