What is an associate on active rain? Does it work like LinkedIn where you have to know the person or do most people welcome the chance to associate with as many people as possible? I just don't want to offend anyone. I know every social networking site has its own culture. Thanks in advance for your help with this.

An associate, Some folk's make others associate's to network with them.
Myself I look at an associate's as being folk's to be friend's with, and to network with.
I have had folk's make me an associate, after I've made a comment on one of their blog post's.
I have also had folk's make me an associate just out of the blue.
I have had folk's if it ok, if they make me an associate of theirs.
When someone dose make me an associate of theirs, I look to see if they had taken the time to read and learn a little about me. If they have, then most times they will take the time to write a note under my photo. When they have add a comment under my photo, I do the same for them. If they have not add a comment, then I don't add one under their photo. But I do make them an associate.
I hope this helps you.
DeAnna, love Stone Mountain - beautiful area. Since you asked, I made you an Associate. You may reciprocate if you like. And I'm on LinkedIn as well. Steve
I agree with Dale and Steve. Associates are people I would consider referrals to or networking with.
I'm also on LinkedIn and if you would like to connect just send me an email via Active Rain and I will send an invite your way.
Deanna,
Generally it is probably not a good idea to post a link to my own post in one of your blogs, but I have an post that asks a similar question.

It has my best effort to understand the mystery of assocates. There are some other links in it also.
The comments are helpful.

Wanted to stop back by, and say thank you for adding me as an associate of yours.
I have reciprocated, by also adding you as one of my associate.
May you and yours, have a fun and safe 4th, of July!
Hi DeAnna,
There are many ways to select an Associate, but similar view points or interest in their view points are one of my criteria. I enjoy asking those who stimulate my thinking and keep me on my toes. Have a great 4th. I also participate in LinkedIn.
Most people here are open to associates. The more you have here, the more you expand your network.
what's LinkedIn--some invited me to that but I didn't know what it was is it like Active Rain--
Aida,
I wrote a response to your question about LinkedIn.

You should definitely join.
Thanks to everyone for responding to my question. Now I need to get busy adding assoicates here.
I didn't understand it myself and had posted the same question.
I'm glad that I read your post and received more information about associates.
I'm also on LinkedIn. I am still not clear on what that site offers also.
