Keys to successful blogging

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Mackintosh REALTORS 82894
The December activerain challenge  ~ A Guide for Blogging Success is co-hosted by Jeff Dowler, CRS, and Brian England this month and we are challenged to give tips about what we should or shouldn't do when blogging.
When I first joined AR back in 2006, like many others in this community, I would come and go reading and watching from the sidelines. Many years later I found my niche, came out of my shell and upgraded my status to Rainmaker. Becoming a Rainmaker allows a member to share their blog posts outside the activerain community.

The key to a successful blogging strategy is being consistent. Every month I post a market update on the local housing statistics for the State of Maryland and my local market in Frederick County. Our State and local associations as well as Bright MLS provide detailed graphs and press releases each month. This provides a plethora of rich content to create my monthly update blog post.

Just like when farming a community you need to be consistently providing frequent and useful information. Over the years I have witnessed many agents begin to farm an area, but then quickly give up by saying "I did a mailing and I didn't get a response." One and done doesn't work!! If you're consistent with your blog and provide useful content you build trust with your followers as the area expert.

The key thing not to do when blogging or commenting is best said by Odd Ball, one of my favorite lines from the movie Kelly's Heroes.

Keep your message upbeat and positive. Don't be a Debbie Downer. As my Mother used to say "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!"

Hello Buzz - your mother's wise advice of avoiding Debbie Downer can be helpful in any situation especially with a blogging strategy.  I can't imagine that approach being effective in the short or long term.  You want followers to connect with your posts or comments not click off.

I heed your Mom's words most of the time, but I am also not afraid to speak up when people need to be held accountable and sometimes it would come off as not being nice, haha.  If we don't speak up then things that are not acceptable become acceptable by default.

Good morning, Buzz... I like how you referred to it as "sitting on the sidelines." I've always said I lurked here forever before doing my fist post. :)

And you are so right... it's all about consistency and all about longevity. (As with most things in life if they are to pay off.)

Absolutely! Consistency is the key for pretty much every strategy I employ. I also find with blogging a nice mix of real estate content and some personal content works well.

Buzz:

Thanks for your entry in the Challenge.

Being consistent is huge with blogging and there's a wealth of content to write about. If readers like what you have to say they will want, and expect, to read more, and success will come from being consistent in your posting.

Negativity in your blogging is best avoided. It doesn't add anything to your post and can be a big turnoff for readers.

Jeff

I remember several years ago, I saw a sign that read, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall."

However, with real estate marketing and blogging, it is consistency that is an important quality for continued success.

Hi Buzz,
Although we can't bury our heads in the sand over the challenges (negatives), we can address them in a problem-solving way. That and consistency... a great combination for success in blogging.

Buzz Mackintosh - Until today I had no idea that you have been around in AR Land this long! You certainly know a thing or two and a whole lot more! I really like your entry. Something that gets under my skin are Debbie Downers who leave comments without regards to the fact that all my blog posts go to my website and there are certain comments by the Debbie Downers I don't appreciate at all. Downers suck me dry! It took awhile for me to realize I could delete them, but unfortunately, they have to be deleted when fresh online or could put a bad taste in someone else's mouth giving readers a bad image of me.

Consistency is key and it should always be quality material because once it is out there, it's there forever. As far as consistency goes, Buzz, I appreciate the fact that you are always consistent and cognizant of what you write in a post or comment and you treat others with respect. Thank  you.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP  unfortunately we live in a 50 / 50 world, I have found from being in leadership positions what ever you decide, often 50% of the people will have a negative opinion and can be energy zappers. There is a constructive and graceful way to respond to them to make them ponder. I hope you have a Merry Christmas!🎅

Hi Buzz- I couldn't agree more!  I too began as a lurker until I received some encouragement through the comments on my post. Being consistent is important because to the reader it says..I'm here to stay.

And yes, be positive. No one wants to read a daily dose of negativity.
