Have You Heard About the Dismal Swamp Fire?

Driving down to North Carolina last weekend, we started passing signs that warned of dangerous ozone levels.  Okay, it was over 90 degrees--that happens sometimes.

We got to a certain point in North Carolina, however, where the smell of smoke was really strong. We switched from satellite radio to local stations to see if we could find out what was burning. Nothing.

Finally, we arrived in the Outerbanks, unpacked the car and computer and I googled it. I had no idea that there was a fire going on in the Dismal Swamp, in both Virginia and North Carolina that had burned over 4000 acres!

In the morning, we can smell it here in the Outer Banks. It usually blows out by lunch time.

I guess I am just really surprised at how little coverage it has gotten outside of the immediate area. I am a self-reported news 'junkie' and if it was reported at home, I would have heard it.

I was just googling to find out the status of the fire and decided to respond.

The fire has been around since at least June and keeps sending fairly noticeable smoke up my way in Newport News. Apparently the main reason it is probably not out after over a month is the large amount of peat involved in the fire. That stuff is really hard to put out. I wish they would put it out as it bothers my lungs in what appears to be a mild allergic reaction to something in the smoke, but once I read it was a peat fire, I understood why it is not out yet.

Here is an update to the status of the Dismal Swamp Fire: http://www.wtkr.com/Global/story.asp?S=8646567.

I am in the Outerbanks and we are still smelling it almost every morning. It must be tough for the folks who are closer to where it is burning.
