Hacks to Prevent Cold Floorings

As the wind gets colder, it also makes it difficult to wake up in the morning. Not only that but walking from one place to another at home seems too unbearable, signaling that it’s almost time for Winter. If you are one of those who are not that fond of the cold season, this blog might be the one for you. Today, we’ll discuss the simple tricks you can do to improve your floorings for the Fall and Winter seasons.

Why Is The Floor Too Cold?

There are several reasons why this is happening at home. The most known causes are poor insulation and air leaks, making it too cold to step on. Both of them are common, especially if the insulation is installed incorrectly. Thus, allowing the cold air to enter. That’s why the floor is still cold even though you have insulation or a heater.

Another thing that can be considered is the material used for the floorings. Some are naturally cold when touched, which can be even colder once the cold season is here. These materials are tiles, vinyl, and others, so it would be best to have alternatives on how you can make your home attain the normal temperature. We’ll discuss that further below!

Simple Hacks to Generate Heat at Home

  1. Carpet and rug

Installing carpet on top of your floorings will add another layer that will help provide heat. Considering that the material of your floorings is naturally cold, at least the feel of the carpet will lessen that impact. Of course, if it fits outside your budget, using rugs is a great alternative too. Place one next to your bed so your feet will feel less cold after waking up.

  1. Sunlight

Another thing you can do is to let heat in your house by using sunlight. Sometimes it is best to open the windows and let the floorings absorb the heat naturally. It will then lessen the coldness of the floorings, making them cozier.

  1. Baking

Lessening the cold is also possible with the help of your oven through baking. After baking, feel free to let the oven door open to let out the heat. It will provide a sweet aroma from your baked goods and, of course, the needed heat.

4. Adding insulation

Do you want a long-term solution to your cold floor issue? It's time to upgrade the insulation in your home's critical areas, such as the basement, foundation, crawl spaces, and attic. Most of the time, foundation air sealing, basement rim joist insulation, and crawl space sealing and insulation are the first steps a home performance contractor will take to keep cold air out... and permanently solve your cold floor problem.

5. Radiant heating

Another long-term option is radiant floor heating, which will definitely warm up your cold floors. It warms your room (and the floors) by heating the floor directly. However, installing radiant floor heating is a fairly intrusive process that necessitates the services of a professional. Furthermore, it is a much more expensive option than, say, purchasing a new rug, as this type of heating system costs between $6 and $20 per square foot to install.

Conclusion

Cold floors are caused by a phenomenon known as the stack effect, and they are a symptom of a larger whole-house issue. Many foundations, basements, and crawl spaces have inadequate (or no) insulation and air leaks, resulting in unbearably cold floors in the winter. The key is to keep your home properly insulated and airtight.
