Friday Fun…Calling All Geeks

When I learned that today is National Technology Day, I thought I’d ask my fellow Geeks and Geekettes what your favorite technological innovations are…your favorite Tech Toys…Gadgets that have enhanced your life…and even medical innovations that help save lives.

The first thing that popped into my mind is the Smartphone. I still remember my first cell phone which was as big as a brick. And would you believe that the only thing I could do was make and receive phone calls?!?

I love that thanks to video conferencing apps we’re able to connect with friends, relatives, and business associates when in-person meetings aren’t possible.  My smart plugs allow me to control my lights when I’m not home.  I don’t know if this counts as new technology but everyone I know is singing the praises of Air Fryers.

I  know that there are some who do not like where technology is headed, and I can see their point. I view these “techie toys” as instruments we can choose to use…or not.

So what about you?  What are your favorite “tech toys” that you love?

My favorite is GPS... makes it so much easier to get around and a big time saver when planning buyer showing tours. As for all those other gadgets like remote security systems, lighting systems, Alexa, etc... I can live without them.

Nina Hollander, Broker I don't know where we would have been without our GPS when we moved back to Houston. Things had changed so much!

Kathy Streib I hadn't thought of it that way, but you're right. I'm sure people moving back to Charlotte after many years away feel the same.

Kathy,

I have to say having technologies is fun.  We have 5 cameras around our home, that I am playing with constantly.  And yes, on several smart plugs.

I like having my office/encyclopedia/emailer/camera/phone in my pocket. I also like wifi enabled printers and speakers. I don't use any of the "smart" devices and don't really have any interest for them (ring doorbells, remote heat/electric controls, Alexa, etc). In fact, I bought a Bose entertainment system which has Alexa built in but I never enabled her. I can pick up the remote to turn it on!

Happy Technology Day!

Hi Kat Palmiotti I do love that at any time, I can reach in my pocket , grab my phone and check the weather, email, Google...whatever I want.

Hello Kathy - I have relatively simple needs these days.  While I appreciate the conveniences that tech provides, I am sure I am not fully utilizing the many possibilities that exist.  And that likely extends beyond any geek-like opportunities.

Michael Jacobs I know we don't use all of our gadgets to the full extent but I do like what they do for us.

My favorite technology is the software programs of a computer especially Word. Yes the smart phone is also great. However the more technology we have, it seems the more we become disconnected from others.

Jan 06, 2023 05:33 AM
Kathy Streib

Leanne Smith I do think that we can rely too heavily on them!  But in instances, like Zoom, they can bring us a little closer.

Possibly for some technology may bring us closer. From what I see dining out, folks on their phones not engaged with each other is somewhat concerning.

Hi Kathy,
It's hard to pick a favorite, but my first favorite was the cell phone. It removed the chains restricting mobility while waiting for a phone call.  The cell phone is probably still my favorite because it does so much more now.

Carol Williams remember when we felt like we had to stay in one place waiting for a call!!!  It's still my favorite.

Oh yes Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty When we moved to Leesburg, Larry was there for months on his own before we could find a home. He was living in an extended stay place and missed his coffee.  This was before Keurig, etc. I found a little Mr. Coffee, or something that would make him one cup.

Good morning Kathy,

I have to say my favorite is my smartphone and then my nest door bell and my cameras outside my house. Geno had them installed the month before he passed and I'm so glad he did!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX  I love my samrtphone and my security cameras as well. In fact, when we got our Ring while we were still in FL, I received message that UPS had delivered a package. However there was nothing when I checked. I checked my Ring footage and it did not show a delivery. I called UPS and everything was worked out.

Good Morning Kathy - I was one of those that jumped on the computer bandwagon early on and never looked back. I loved how it made everything so much easier to do for biz.  I also loved a previous little flip phone that could fit in a shirt pocket - plus it was yellow!  But of course it had to go as soon as a new phone came out - before the smart phone.  Can't remember what they were called but I loved it. Texting was so easy.  Not as easy on smart phone.

Anna Banana Kruchten Phoenix Broker our friend always uses the microphone to "write" his texts!!!  I tried it once and it is easy as long as there aren't others around.

Whilst the smartphone is as powerful, if not more powerful than my first computer, there are times and days when I just want to turn it off. Our latest gizmo is a smart doorbell at our new home. it allows us well me to see who is at the door, and the app also allows me to set our thermostats when away from home too. Very useful.

Hello Kathy Streib , an interesting question.  Double edge sword.  They all seem to be favorites when working as we want them to.  And they all seem evil when giving us heart ache for not working as they are supposed to.  lol  Make it a great weekend.  mdm

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho oh yes...our neighbor was over earlier today because his laptop wouldn't come on. He's a lovely man but he is one of those who shouldn't have a computer (or smartphone.)

Hi Kathy Streib - My husband is the "real geek" of our family.  I absorb some of it because I am around him 24/7! haha.  We went to Macs from PCs in 2006.  When I got into real estate, all the programs were for a PC.  We had to run two operating systems.

So my vote goes for the Cloud.  Once to Cloud took hold, everything became so much easier for the Mac user.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® what I love is that any photo I take on my smartphone is immediately backed up to the cloud!!! Very reassuring.

I did not know this was National Technology Day.  I also learned it is National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day.  Perhaps, we could get a techno wizard to create a robot to take down the holiday decorations.

I would say I'm like Michael Jacobs when it comes to technology these days. If not for Rick with all his apps for the tv I would probably still be living with just cable tv and paying all my bills by hand using checks. LOL
