Sometimes the Critters are Not Enough.

We all love pets and those of us who own pets know that they love us as well BUT sometimes it's not enough, we all desire human love and kindness.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

What age group does SAD affect the most?

At What Age Is Depression Most Common? According to CDC data from 2019, 21% of adults experiencing any depressive symptoms in the most recent two weeks were between 18 and 29 years old. This incidence is the largest among all adult age groups.

What month is Seasonal Affective Disorder the worst?

The most common period for the onset of a SAD episode is late October through November. January and February are the worst months overall, and the symptoms don't fully subside until early May.

This is the time we need to be careful to respond to and take action when friends and even good acquaintances seem to be "off" and out of the blue ask if "we can get together". Don't be to busy to recognize a possible plea for help.

I recognize others may suffer from SAD yet in all my life I have not encountered such a depression. I do understand those in Seattle Washington where sunshine is quite rare experience depression. Our bodies need Vitamin D which we receive from the sun and most people are lacking this necessary vitamin.

That's why I live in Eastern Washington where sun is pletiful!

Pets can certainly give unconditional love .. but yes , it's not a replacement for humans.. just a wonderful supplement

I myself have struggled from time to time with our long winters and very short days Leanne Smith but thank God my faith has kept me from harming myself. It doesn't happen every year but on occasion.

I believe since our bodies are conditioned to more sunshine than darkness we are fighting internal genetic conditioning which is very difficult. My husband was assigned to Seattle during his last year of his tour after leaving Vietnam and was beyond happy to leave Seattle.

Amen Lise Howe . We have always had pets in our home as we feel it's a good way to teach children about respecting life and also how to deal with death as it inevitably comes to all living creatures.

Hi Bob,
This is a great message. If someone asks if you want to get together, there is a reason. Find a way to make it happen.

I'm thinking this happens more in rainy and wintry/cloudy areas.  I don't recall anyone I know having this issue in sunny AZ.  When a friend needs to talk, I listen and it's usually over coffee or lunch or a glass of wine.  But it's not about weather....

That is right Carol Williams . I will always regret not seeing a plea for help back in 2011 and a young military man took his life over a divorce.

I believe you are right Anna Banana Kruchten Phoenix Broker . We can have several overcast days in a row and it affects nearly everyone's mood. You may remember that up here in the winter there are no distinguishable clouds... it's just a solid mass of grey.

Hi Bob- I know someone who lives in the north and tends so suffer from this during the winter months. Studies have shown the importance of sunshine. Many years ago I had a stationary bike that had a light attachment that people could use while they rode it.

Good morning Bob. Sometimes when people don't reach out to you it is time to reach out to them. No time for Seasonal Affective Disorder in my thinking. Enjoy your day.

Hmm, I am not sure that we all love pets, haha.  I am not much of a pet person and love is a pretty strong word, haha.

This is a timely reminder to share. You often do not know about the troubles others are facing.

My wife, Dolores, just called from the hospital. She had a bad night as she tries to recover from her hip replacement surgery.

I agree Wayne Martin and I do reach out often through texts and emails but it is not the same as in person contact. I am a very social person so I would fit in very well in an environment like your with 100 or more neighbors to visit with. That being said I would miss my own garage and yard.

Understood Brian England  but those of us that have pets usually do love them and sometimes people love their pets even more then they love people (NOT good).

I would hope that everyone that has a pet loves them tremendously, why have them if you aren't going to love them, haha.

Roy Kelley I am really sorry to hear about Doloris. I am actually taking time to pray for her comfort and a speedy recovery RIGHT NOW.

We do need to take time to listen to others and if they are in despair we need to get actively involved... even if it means involving authorities.
