Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: 988

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that routes callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) and is now active.

When you call, text, or chat 988, you will be connected to trained counselors who will listen, understand, provide support, and connect you to resources if necessary. The previous Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis. Read more here.

This is a City of Gaithersburg, Maryland announcement.

I did not know the new number.  It really makes sense that they have made is such an easy number to remember. Thank you for sharing it.

Roy Kelley - I saw that Bill Salvatore - East Valley re-blogged your post. Here is what I commented on his post but it belongs to you and all who may read this:

Suicide is something one thinks about when they knew someone who committed suicide. My best friend's father committed suicide when we were nine years old. I still remember every detail of that evening it occurred. Actually, my dad was taking me to the eye doctors and left me in the car while he went to see what happened a few doors away from where our car was parked. When my dad told me what happened, I cried. I knew before my friend, her mother, and sister knew. I continued to pray for him all these years, and his daughter (my very best friend) who died about 30 years ago. But if she had to die, I was glad it wasn't because of suicide. Yet, I still remember the pain and vicariously I lived through her own pain and suffering. Sadly, she blamed herself and never could overcome what she believed was the truth. Back then, school counselors did not exist.

Good morning, Roy... such an important announcement. As someone who has experienced suicide personally, it's a traumatic thing to live through.
