Building a New House & Pregnancy

Those of you who have ever built a new home along with those who have given birth will understand exactly what this post is about. My husband and I are currently building what we say is "the last home we will build". Time will tell.

When you decide to go ahead and build that house, the initial emotions are excitement as you determine the land or lot, choose a house plan, go through a myriad of selections, and choose a builder. Everything is fun at this point and expectations are high. This is much like when you first find out a new baby is coming.

Next, comes the middle trimester. The process of dealing with contractors, supply chain issues, scheduling, and so much more. However, you see progress as your home takes shape. In the middle of most pregnancies, is the time when you feel better than you did in the first trimester and you continue to see progress.

As you enter the final trimester of pregnancy, you are now really ready to give birth to that baby! Well, we are now in those final phases of building and we are ready to give birth to this house. We are tired and weary, and the initial excitement has waned.

It is very important if you decide to build a home to make sure you have great representation from an agent who knows the new construction process. Be wary of the builder who tells you not to have your own agent. A trusted and an experienced agent will walk through the process with you and help you navigate the issues that will arise.

Best wishes if you are in the new build process now or are thinking about engaging in the process. Just as with birth, the final event is momentous and worth all of the struggles you experienced. Hang in there!

Hello Paula - some people like to build multiple special moments as they look to combine lots of experiences.  Others are satisfied to seek out individual occurrences.  Maybe sequentially or in some other order that fits them.

Of course, surprises can happen along the way regardless of what one chooses.  And at times, those can come in a fast and furious way (kinda like a movie car chase scene).  Preplanning and upfront preparation can make a difference.  Sometimes.  However, life doesn't always offer that luxury.  As many understand from experience.

Building a home is a huge undertaking.  The joy and the pains can be similar to pregnancy.

Congratulations to you and your husband on your new build!

I haven't built a house myself, but have witnessed family members and friends who have.  The process can certainly have its frustrations at times, but usually in the end, it works out.  I wish you the best of luck in having a very successful building experience, Paula.

It's sad when people think they don't need an agent when building because they work directly with the contractor. Whose best interest does the builder have in mind? Yep. Theirs.

Good morning Paula,

I just caught your post in Carol Williams Saturdays Second Chance Series, somehow I missed it. What a perfect analogy.. Building a home is not for the faint of heart. I have represented many buyers on new home and being able to hold their hand through the process certainly kept their emotions from spiraling out of control! I loved building our current home with my husband but we were so ready the last 2-3 weeks to get it done and closed! I'm sure you will be happy when yours is completed and you can move in!

Dr. Paula- When building a new home one should have outside representation. As an agent, I would also seek representation. There are many issues that may arise that you need outside advice. Buying and building a house is a very emotional experience. So glad Carol Williams featured this

There are so many times where the two things are inevitably linked together so often. Good luck to anyone experiencing this right now. :
