Universal Design Tips to Make Your Home More Accessible

When you’re designing your home, you want it to feel comfortable for everyone, and that means making improvements to make your home more accessible for people with disabilities, or to more comfortably deal with limitations brought on by age.

But what, exactly, do those improvements look like?

recent article from realtor.com outlined design tips to help make your home more accessible—a movement called universal design—including:

  • Upgrade your lighting. Poor lighting (including missing or burned out bulbs, or bulbs in different colors and wattage temperatures) isn’t just a design issue; for people that struggle with their vision, it can also be a safety issue. Make your home safer—and more aesthetically pleasing—by replacing all of your lighting with new, matching LED bulbs.
  • Cabinet organizers. Digging through a messy, disorganized cabinet to find a specific item isn’t just inconvenient; for people with mobility issues, it can be extremely challenging. To make access easier for everyone, consider installing pull out cabinet organizers.
  • Voice-activated upgrades. Again, for people with mobility issues, getting up to turn on a light or adjust the volume on the television can be extremely challenging, or even impossible in some cases. Luckily, all you need to solve this issue is the right technology—more specifically, smart home technology that responds to voice commands.
