Not Everyone Loves Your Dog

Now, wait a minute! I know this post may rattle a few dog-lover cages however, let me make my point. Many people these days have pets. Of all the pet lovers, dogs are by far more popular. This is where it can get rough (ruff)!

Specifically, when selling your home, it is imperative to remember that not everyone will love and appreciate your dog. Therefore, following a few pet guidelines during the times your home is showing is very important:

  1. Keep the dog put up during showings. Ensuring your pet is either in a kennel or other secure location is key. You certainly do not want your dog to get out during a showing and, you definitely do not want even the friendliest of dogs to be out. A pet that is allowed to roam the house, jump on guests, etc. is not the reception you want.
  2. Take the dog with you during a showing. If you can, this is the most ideal situation so the dog is not barking during the visit. There is nothing more irritating than trying to show a home with a dog barking the entire time.
  3. Put away pet toys and dog bowls. While these items are part of your everyday life, putting them away during a showing is important. These items can cause a space to look cluttered.
  4. Check for pet smells. You may not notice any pet smells but I guarantee you, if your home has a pungent pet odor, others WILL notice. Wash pet beds or blankets and make sure carpets and rugs have been cleaned. It is gross to enter a home that reeks of pet smells.
  5. Repair any pet damages in the home. Dogs especially can cause wear and tear in a home. Go through your home and assess each room for any areas such as scratches, etc. that need to be repaired prior to placing your home on the market. This includes the back yard. Fill in holes, repair gates, and put in fresh turf if it is worn. If you want top dollar, do the repairs now.

I love my dog but, if my home is on the market, I need to make some adjustments. The goal is to get your home sold so Fido may need to take a back seat (literally) during showing season. Not everyone will love your dog the way you do!
