World Wide Spay Day
Everyone who follows my blog knows I am the Mom to a wonderful rescue dog. In my home currently, we have 3 dogs and a cat, all have been either spayed or neutered. The last Tuesday of February is not just National Spay Day but World Wide Spay Day.
The purpose of this day is to increase awareness of the importance of spaying and neutering programs to help reduce the stray pet populations and alleviate overcrowding at pet shelters.
Through education, spay, and neuter programs in shelters raise awareness prior to the adoption of cats and dogs. In neighborhood programs, spay and neuter programs effectively reduce stray populations over the long term. These types of programs are especially effective where feral cat populations exist and since those cats cannot be domesticated, spaying and neutering in these communities is the most humane way to reduce the population.
Spay Day USA was founded in 1994 by the Doris Day Animal League and since then has spread worldwide.
Here are a few ways you can observe World Spay Day
- Support a spay and neuter program in your area - SPCA or Barcs
- Host a fundraiser or approach your community leaders to create a program in your town.
- Learn more about the importance of spaying and neutering
- Ask your veterinarian questions or volunteer at your local shelter
