New Bern Parks and Recreation hosts the city's celebration Friday at Union Point Park, beginning at 3 p.m., featuring entertainment and food vendors. Misting tents will be available to keep help with the effects of heat. Inflatable rides, including slide, obstacle course and bounce house, will be available. Fees will be charged for the rides and will benefit the recreation department teen council, YAAC, which stands for Young Adults Active in the Community.
From 7 to 9 p.m., the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band will feature big band music, classical marches and patriotic music. The fireworks show follows.
People will be allowed to take coolers, bags and baskets into the park. Glass bottles, alcohol and bicycles are prohibited. All bags will be screened for banned items. Pets, even those on leashes, will not be allowed inside the park, a departure of the rules in previous years. Service animals such as seeing-eye dogs are permitted.
