The much publicized "Hands Free Cell Phone" law for California drivers has been effect for a few days now and boy, do I feel safe while driving. No more fumbling with a clumsy cell phone that just fell off the car seat while ringing. I just have to press the magic button on my ultra L.A.-cool, Jedi approved, Blue Tooth earpiece...oops..held the button too long and now it asks, "Say a command." Press the button again..."Hello"..."Hello"..."Can you hear me know?"...BEEP...Press the button again...another incoming call..."Hello, this is...BEEP...call just dropped...BEEP, BEEP..."Say a command"...Yikes...heading into oncoming traffic lane...near collision. Good thing I wasn't on my hand-held cell phone! Don'tcha all feel safer now that I have one of these blue-light blinking gizmos growing out of my ear?
But seriously, folks, I'm sure it will only be amatter of...years...before I am comfortable and in control of my vehicle while dialing and answering through this new technology. I feel like the first time I was behind the wheel as a teenager with my father yelling explitives as I swerved, sped, tailgated and hit curbs as we rolled along.
But I digress. The sad but true part of this new "headset" law is that it is still legal to text while driving!!! Apparently, texting was not yet the rage when the brain trust of California legislators wrote this law. So now a driver can merrily text with one or both hands and still be in compliance with the law.
I'm sure that police/sheriff/CHP officers will argue strongly that the texting rule is "included" in their intrepretation but I am equally certain that competant attorneys will draw a different conclusion.
Back to the title of this post...Just Because You Can...Doesn't Mean You Should...I would really prefer AND highly recommend that you DO NOT text while driving. You might have to swerve suddenly, spilling your double espresso, low-fat, soy (with three sugars) latte all over your freshly sign listing agreement, drop your bagel on the floor and miss an incoming phone call.
