Walking Down the Aisle Takes a Back Seat to Homeownership for Millennials

For years, most people followed a similar path. Go to school. Get married. Buy a house. In 2023, that path no longer works for many millennials—and purchasing a home has moved right up the priority list.

According to a recent survey from LendingTree, young adults are getting married later in life than previous generations. However, they’re not delaying homeownership! Now, 24% of millennials put purchasing a home ahead of getting married; another 27% are putting off starting a family until after homeownership. In fact, 43% of all first-time homebuyers in the US now are single!

If you’re a millennial and homeownership is your top priority, you are not alone. There are plenty of other millennials who are buying homes before getting married or starting a family. So if that’s your plan, don’t wait! Now is a great time to make a move and turn your dream of homeownership into a reality.

Thinking of buying a home in the Charlotte Metro? Call the right Realtor® and let’s talk - (704) 491-3310.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr.! Yes, same here but, the numbers have certainly increased. Happy to see those independent women finding their way, THEN getting married!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I'm getting the same news here about Millennials. Except with a few caveats. Many don't ever plan on getting married. The majority don't believe in religion or marriage. A lot don't believe in having children.

Sad.

We were in Denver a few years back and one of the nurses gave us a lecture on how we needed to stop procreating - for the environment. I suppose we're putting all of this effort into 'saving the earth' only for the robot to manage it...I mean humans will soon be extinct, according to their brilliant plan!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - FYI... I found your comment only because I am going through all blog posts during the last seven days to make sure I didn't miss any AR MARCH CHALLENGE POSTS.

The threading on comments is not working for me.

Hello Debe - a life in real estate can be an eye opener or surprise to some to what is happening around us.  Staying involved means keeping alert to changes even subtle ones.   Some realize realty reminds us reality can be quite different than what some perceive.

Oh, I agree, Michael Jacobs! I love hearing reports of how our market is and they are SO far off from reality. It's obvious who has boots on the ground and who doesn't!!

I feel the same way, Brian England! It's difficult to get through to these newest generations sometimes!

That's a whole lot more than I thought too, Kat Palmiotti. I am confident that a fair number of those are widows & widowers as well.

Those are interesting statistics.  I can always find a good wife, but a special home in a tight market is harder to find.

Debe unfortunately the path of purchasing first and then marring latter comes with serious financial issues when they fall out of love and neither one can afford the mortgage on their own.
