Declaring My Independence!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Whitelaw & Sons Real Estate Services DRE# 00984909

I am happy to pass along to everyone that I have started my very own real estate brokerage company. Despite the current market conditions, perhaps even because of them, I know that this is the time to go out and try to make my own mark on the business - where I call the shots.

The paperwork is done or on the way and I could not be more excited. While it is a great time for me, I know that the market is ready for a brokerage that bases its performance not only on volume and sales but on the metrics that really mean something to buyers and sellers.

While brokers and real estate agents have for years tried to convince the public that if an agent sold more houses than another agent they were the better choice, the reality is quite different. The truth is that buyers and sellers should be more interested in things like how many of the listings an agent took were successfully sold? Did the home sell in more or less time than the comparables? How close to asking price did the agent get? Those are the numbers that matter and my plan is to make that fact an integral part of how my company measures success - and compensates its agents.

As someone far wiser than I has said "A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step." So here is to my first step and I look forward to working with some of you out there in the very near future!

Hey! Go for it. I did it after 18 years and worked out of my den. Working in your underwear has some pluses and minuses. Gave it up after 6 years because I was losing touch because of lack of interaction with agents and local industry happenings.

Love Being RealtorĀ® in the Nashville TN Area!

Congratulations!  We opened our own (literally) mom and pop office in April, 2008.  So far, so good.  We love it. We find that we have to network, have to take classes, go to broker open houses to stay in touch. But it's great!

Being on your own is great!  If you have an outside office, you have a whole set of bills to pay that you didn't have before, but the independence is great- especially if you're a self starter. Good Luck!

Norma. I was first licensed in 1988. Took a break to go into high tech in 93 and came back in 2000.  So I have had to restart my real estate business a couple of times.

I am considering getting a brick and mortar office. I have found a couple of places that have minimal expenses and several offices share a secretary, conference room, break room, internet access and janitorial. My feeling is that I carry on for the rest of the year working out of my home office. Then go for an actual office early next year. As I have it setup now, I could easily support a tech saavy agent. I have created a few tools that are custom made to facilitate fax distribution and sending, "virtual" floor time, etc. all via the internet.

Sarah and John, I would love to get updates on how things go for you. I plan to do the broker open house thing each week - at least as soon as school starts again. I have three little boys and right now the majority of my morning belongs to them.

Thank you all for the encouragement and kind words.
