Asbestos in New Orleans

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used in building materials for many years due to its heat resistance and strength. However, when asbestos-containing materials are damaged or disturbed, asbestos fibers can become airborne and pose a serious health risk to anyone exposed to them.

New Orleans is no exception when it comes to the presence of asbestos in buildings. Many homes, schools, and public buildings in the city were constructed during a time when asbestos was commonly used in building materials such as insulation, ceiling tiles, and floor tiles.

If you live in New Orleans and are concerned about the presence of asbestos in your home or workplace, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that not all asbestos-containing materials are dangerous. If the materials are in good condition and not disturbed, the fibers are typically not released into the air. However, if you suspect that asbestos-containing materials in your home or workplace are damaged, deteriorating, or are being renovated or demolished, it is important to take appropriate precautions.

The first step is to hire a licensed and accredited asbestos professional to inspect your home or workplace for the presence of asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is found, the professional can advise you on the best course of action to take.

If the asbestos-containing materials are in good condition, the professional may recommend leaving them in place and monitoring them for any changes. If the materials are damaged or deteriorating, the professional may recommend having them encapsulated or removed.

It is important to never attempt to remove asbestos-containing materials on your own. This can be extremely dangerous and can release asbestos fibers into the air, putting you and others at risk of exposure. Instead, hire a licensed and accredited asbestos abatement contractor to safely remove the materials.

In addition to hiring a professional, it is important to educate yourself on the proper handling and disposal of asbestos-containing materials. Asbestos-containing materials should be disposed of in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.

If you suspect that you or a loved one has been exposed to asbestos, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. Asbestos exposure can cause serious health problems such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis.

If you live in New Orleans and are concerned about the presence of asbestos in your home or workplace, it is important to take appropriate precautions to protect yourself and your family. Hire a licensed and accredited asbestos professional to inspect your property, never attempt to remove asbestos-containing materials on your own, and educate yourself on the proper handling and disposal of asbestos-containing materials. By taking these steps, you can help ensure a safe and healthy environment for yourself and those around you.

Dan Paradela - you are welcomed to ActiveRain by me! Thank you for a great and very informative educational post on asbestos, a known product that is still quite mysterious to consumers. I am reminded of what happened to my children's school in a small unincorporated area of Lake County, IL. It was a primary school for K-3rd grade before going on to another school for 4-6, which was a stepping stone to 7-8 in the same school district. Studies were being done because of the number of children in the primary schools developing cancer. Investigations were conducted and it was determined the school was so old (built and filled with dangerous asbestos) it had to be torn down and evacuated by students immediately. That was back in the 1980's after most of the children were already in upper grades or in High School. My children were still in grade school but nothing was disclosed to the parents or by the Town to resisdents from that community. The only information that was available to me, as a parent whose children went to these three schools is that it was established in 1844 as a one room log cabin that expanded and was renovated over time. Rather than share the risks they focused on the excitement of getting a new school which was necessary and that was why property taxes were going up!
