Chattanooga began its community celebration of July 4, Independence Day, last night with the Annual Pops on the River concert. There were thousands of people in Coolidge Park for the event, and almost that many red, white, and blue balloons. The concert is also known as Pops in the Park.
The Pops on the River celebration is produced by the Chattanooga Dowtown Partnership. This group is part of the visionary leadership which is propelling Chattanooga into national prominence as a place to live. The mission is to promote the downtown area and to "enhance the quality and viability of the downtown area."
The celebration features the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera. This organization is one of Chattanooga's top attractions. I will write about this nationally recognized symphony and its director, Maestro Bob Bernhardt, in the future.
The Chattanooga Symphony plays the Star Spangled Banner to start the July 4 celebration.
The CSO plays a Military Service Theme medley.
The Dismembered Tennesseans join the CSO to perform at the July 4 celebration in Coolidge Park.
The Dismembered Tennesseans with the CSO, play Tennessee Waltz.
The Pops on the River brings families from around the Hamilton County area and beyond to enjoy an evening in Coolidge Park with the water fountain and the carousel and the beautiful park grounds on the Tennessee River.

Playing in the Coolidge Park water fountain.
The crowd was treated to two different fireworks displays. The first was across the river at the AT&T ball field. It started during the last song of the night by the Chattanooga Symphony.
The video here is the finale of the main fireworks after the concert. My Vado battery ran out, and I switched to my digital camera. But look at the other videos from the news station that are linked after my video.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press gave the park celebration front page coverage, and estimated the attendance at 25,000. It sure seemed more to me. One newschannel estimated 50,000. That is closer, but I would be surprised if the number were not closer to 100,000. There is a terrific slide show linked to the article. To see just the Pops in the Park photos, click here.
I will probably post more photos and videos later this weekend. There are more fireworks and music videos. The Dismembered Tennesseans played several pieces and were a highlight of the evening.
