As a dedicated foodie, finding new restaurants, and visiting the favorites, is a passion of mine.

Auggie's House of Crab in Leucadia, EncinitasThat’s not to say I am out eating at some eatery daily or even multiple times a week – after all, the food at home is some of the best, IMO. But now and then the opportunity arises to check out a new place.

I was in Leucadia yesterday visiting Sanctum, a relatively new gallery along the Coast Highway, and since it was lunch time my wife and I decided to check out a new Leucadia restaurant - Auggie’s House of Crab founded by Agostino Scalercio (Auggie)...owner, cook, you name it.

Auggie’s House of Crab is on the coast road at the northern end of Leucadia (Encinitas) and well worth a visit, especially if you are a seafood lover. Leucadia is a funky beach town and Auggie’s fits right in.

Mural at Auggie's House of Crab in Leucadia, Encinitas

No pretension here. Come as you are to enjoy the simple but colorful décor, a wide range of seafood offerings, and friendly staff (ask for Diane to wait on you – she’s terrific), all of which make for an ideal quick lunch, one of Auggie’s feasts, or a casual dinner. Crab, of course, is popular. But I understand their shrimp burgers are outstanding.

Now that Auggie’s is open for lunch, they have daily specials that are a real bargain – 3 seafood quesadillas yesterday (with chips and salsa) for $5 plus a beverage? How can you miss?

Auggie’s is destined for dining greatness in Leucadia and I will definitely be back to enjoy more. Stop by for a terrific meal at 1468 North Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas. (760) 634-CRAB [2722] and visit their website for more information.

Liz - I'm glad that fast food restaurants are hard to get approved in some of these towns.  I love trying funky little places and patronizing the local businesses. Who needs fast food?

TRE - well it makes good sense for promoting your area to consumers and getting to know some of the local businesses.

Gary - it's the best wasy to enjoy crab, and seafood in general. Southern California is pretty casual and being able to walk in off the beach to a place like Auggie's is the best way to dine sometimes. And the prices are terrific.

Thanks, Diane. I have done a few but admit I was inspired to do more from your post on writing restaurant reviews for localism. And what a great side benefit...great food. Crab and shrimp are some of my faves, adndthis place will get visited often I think.

I've always been a fan of shellfish, and the lunch special sounds great! Nice choice of the Zydeco music for your RES. Just one question -- if I stop by and tell them 'Jeff sent me' will I get a free appetizer, or end up washing my own dishes? :)

Teresa - thanks for such a nice compliment. I think that is the intent...to get folks interested enough to chck it out. They'll find it's worth it.

Zachry - I appreciate the compliment. Since I am such a food nut over finding new spots is always a pleasure. Now I need to focus more on doing reviews too. Guess you are now providing a different kind of menu, right?

Jeff, I love places like this! I'm getting ready to write a piece about  a cafe here in Burleson that has the BEST country breakfast!

You are the best at localism, though. I'm with some of your other commenters...I can smell the salt air and taste the crab. Yummm! But, I have a question??? Are you ever home? LOL

Jeff, You have inspired me to step it up a bit for localism! I was planning on it, but you just raised the bar a little higher. Fantastic review and I loved the video!  Way to go. Loved it. Hey, wouldn't we be able to write off our food bill if we blog about it? lol..

I remember years ago (92-96) in Encinitas there being a wonderful seafood restaurant on PCH across from an old movie theatre that served some awesome seafood dishes.

They would cover the table with butcher wrap before bringing the food to our table.  Once they bought your meal to the table they would dump it on the covered table and have you go at it.  All meals would come with potatoes and corn that was prepared in seafood drippings.

It was a wonderful place to stop for lunch on the way to San Diego or Stop for dinner on the way back going north.  I tried to Google map it but wasn't very successful months ago to see if it was still in business.

The ride from the freeway was also fun as it was a hilly terrain that felt like you were on a roller coaster if you traveled the speed limit or a little faster.

Hi Jeff,

Looks like a great place. With so many "formula" places/chains out there I love finding little places like this.

Elizabeth - well I look forward to reading some more of your Localism posts.

Bob and Carolyn - too bad wen can do something about the smells virtually!

FNP - not sure which place that might be, or even if it is still there. Well check it out when I am in that part of town again.

Sharon - I am a big seafood fan myself, so any place that serves it is on my list. Part of the fun is finding new ones to try.

Lynda - agreed. I tend to steer away from chain restaurants.
