A MOM whose actions speak louder than words

My Organic Market (MOM's) located in East Columbia, MD is a great example of GREEN Business and how action speaks louder than words.  MOM‘s Purpose:

Our Mission, our reason for existing and our #1 priority is to restore the environment to the maximum extent we are able. Whether taking action as individuals (both employees and customers), as a company, influencing other companies, funding legislative efforts, or supporting environmental advocacy groups, we will work tirelessly towards ensuring a clean and restored environment for our children and many future generations.

ACTIONS

In January 2006, MOM‘s purchased 1.5 million Kilowatt-hours of Wind Energy. This purchase represents our entire energy use for one year at four stores.

The benefits of this wind-powered energy are:

The elimination of the emissions equal to: 130 cars per year or Offsetting the contamination of the air produced by 150 average households or The positive value of planting 122,486 trees, which naturally remove harmful amounts of carbon dioxide from the air.

RESULTS

MOM's on EPA's Top Ten Green Power List

INFLUENCE

They have an environmental corner, they sell re-usable bags, they collect and recycle household batteries as well as plastic bags, glass and aluminum and ran a promotion called "We love Inflation", a promotion where they wouId check your tire pressure.  It turns out that tire inflation saves you $$ and provides environmental benefits too.

It’s clear that their mission coincides with how they do business.  I am inviting them to my office to see how I can help in the cause.  I have already taken action with the earth friendly light bulbs in my home and I have been recycling for years.

MOM sounds cool!  I am very into changing the way we generate electricity in this country from mainly coal, oil and natural gas and harnessing renewable energy!

Dena -- Thank you for your comment -The front cover page of Baltimore Sun was Green -maybe it'll be my part 2 in a series.

Renee -- They have a ECO corner so that customers can learn more as well as participate in using an alternative energy source.  Thxs for your comment.

Jaime -- what's cool is when we are aware and think about the environment beyond what our individual needs are --I even try to drive 55-60mph --the little things make a big difference.  Thank you for commenting.
