Sarah (and members):
Recently, I received a message from someone that I had been "memed". The invitation to participate in what is ostensibly a chain letter, said ...
"A meme is an internet game similar to a chain letter except you post on line."
I have a hunch that when Richard Dawkins (the foremost authority on genetics, atheism, and a profoundly critical thinker) first coined the term "meme", he had a definition in mind that is far different from an "internet game" of tagging one another in hopes that they will act in some [positive?] way.
Read my assessment of this mischaracterized use of the term "meme" and help me understand how so many people could be wrong about it, unless of course my assessment is correct, and the misuse of the term is itself, a "meme" and the definition is being improperly applied. ;-)
To be clear, I'm not attacking the nature of your definition of "memeing" (whis is debateable that such an act exists) - I think it's great to get to know each other better and make new social connections. I just want to understand [from a social perspective] how this group (and seemingly everyone at AR) justifies the use of this term in the context it is being applied.
