I am often reminded about something my Mentor told me everytime someone tells me they are having trouble marketing themselves.  I ask them "Are you a Secret Agent". What I mean by that is what do they do to let people know they are an agent.  This question can relate to sales agents in all professions, be it Real Estate, Mortgages, Insurance, or Financial Planning.  You need to let people know what you do if you want to sell your services.

The Sales business is truely a numbers game.  Babe Ruth was once asked if he was dissapointed when ever he struck out.  He stated "No, as I know each time I strike out, I am that much closer to a Home Run."  He knows the numbers.  He knows that he has a number in his head, such as every 20 at bats results in a home run.  Are you running your business as a numbers game?.  Are you a Secret Agent?

Make sure that people know what you do for a living.  I make it a habit to regularly wear shirts that display what I do right on the shirt.  My shirts often raise questions from people seeing the name or logo, and that in turn moves into a conversation.  A good friend of mine even put an ad on the back of a T-shirt with a uniqe quote on the back, and it resulted in him getting two appointments from people who saw the shirt at a baseball game he attended.

I hope this helps people understand, that being a "Secret Agent" in our business only leads to Poverty.

Thanks for the advice.  It's tough going today but you are right, to succeed we need to 'brand' ourselves.  Happy selling!  Veronica

Thomas, do you have any good shirt ideas? Do you work for a large brand and just get the Polos with the embossed logo on the front, or do you go a step further? I'd be interested in seeing a blog with the details of what you think is a good shirt.

When you are taking your REaltor license or training course to be a Stager you tell eveyrone what you are doing. You are excited about it, you tell everyone what you are doing and keep them updated even if they don't want to hear. LOL!!

After you achieve that milestone you forget to let everyone know what is happening in your world and wonder why you feel like a "secret agent".

If you don't think you have anything to share with the world, organize a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity or some other charity that you think would benefit. Then you have a reason to do a Realtor presentation, talk to the cashier at the store, go to an open house and introduce yourself. Look for partners in your fundraiser.

Get Smart!

I don't have shirts but I wear my name tag most all of the time so people know who I am.

Many people in sales, don't know that's what they do.  They go to the office, play games on the computers, go on tour after tour and never prospect or work their client base.  It's been a constant in the Buffini mentor training to be reminded of this fact.  Thanks for bringing it up.

Hi Terrylynn, I know that people start to think that they are bothering other people when they talk about what they do for a living.

I will have a perfectly wonderful conversation with someone in line at Walmart or in the parking lot when I am putting all the things I have just bought for  job into my car.

I will come home and tell my husband all about how I met someone  and he will say something positive to this effect. " You always think that people are just waiting to hear all about how you can help them and thank goodness you always seem to come across someone that does need you".

Don't be shy about what you do. Talk to everyone about your passion. It works.

If there is anyone in the 4 county area who doesn't know we are realtors...it is because we don't have sign language perfected yet...My husband never comes home from the gas station, grocery store, recycling center, etc. without a story about who he met, who "may be selling, listing, moving..." opportunities are everywhere...making yourself visible will help you find them and they FIND  you !
