Spanky

Regular readers of my blog may well remember the US Marine I wrote about in The truth from the front lines in Iraq William "Spanky" Gibson is the first member of the military in the entire history of the United States who returned to a combat zone after having an above the knee amputation. And he volunteered!

Well today during a regular exchange of e-mail, Spanky wrote to tell me that he is no longer a Gunnery Sergeant. No sir! My friend has been promoted to Master Sergeant of Marines - very well deserved I might add, and what better day to get this news than today? SPanky is still serving in Iraq in case you missed that.

So I say a big congratulations to Master Sergeant of Marines William "Spanky" Gibson. I hope your Fourth was safe and happy and we thank you for defending our freedom so that today we were all able to enjoy the fruits of those freedoms on this Holiday weekend.

We salute you sir!.

Oh and one final thing - at the end of all Spanky's e-mails, he has a tag line. I'm sure he won't mind me sharing it with you.

"There is no better honor than to serve our country"

God bless you, your family and all your Marine brothers and sisters Spanky.

Shannon - they are all amazing, but I think Spanky stands out for all kinds of reasons.

Simon -  I don't have the words to express that gratitude and pride I feel for Master Sargeant Spanky Gibson. He certainly deserves that promotion. I like his tag line. Unfortunately, he would probably not be allowed to speak at most schools in the country he is serving.

Simon,

Thanks for sharing and please tell your friend we appreciate his service to our country. Did he get promoted to E-8 or E-9? I am not familiar with the enlisted ranks in the marine corps as I was enlisted Air force.
